badfish79 Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I recall them carrying them at one point, I think around the time before the champ became the champ xp Quote
Mr. Bassin II Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 BPS has the ability to control the price they pay for inventory. This results in the overwhelming majority of the profit accruing to BPS and not the manufacturer. Not many premium equipment/tackle manufacturers are found at BPS for this reason. 3 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 29, 2023 Super User Posted July 29, 2023 I’ve noticed the same thing with other brands. Last month I wanted a light weight St Croix rod. They didn’t have it but would order it and charge me $20 to ship it 12 miles. I ordered it from St. Croix for $10 less than bps and had it shipped several hundred miles for $10. It seems to me that they really only want to stock their own products. Quote

I agree with this^^ If you look,... The majority of their rod space is all BPS branded rods. About the only other things they carry is some Pure Fishing products (Lower level Fenwick, Abu and Berkley) some lower level St Croix, and a few lower level Duckett rods. I can't honestly remember the last time I bought a rod from BPS. Getting to be about the same with reels. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 They have a high profit margin on the vast majority of BPS brand items. They probably make more money selling a 120$ BPS rod then they would selling a 300$ Dobyns. If they need to make room for new stock, they can liquidate their items quickly and still break even. 4 Quote

padlin Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Have noticed the same idea in grocery stores, high quality name brands disappearing and shelves filling with the lower quality store brand. Quote
Diggy Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I do know Dick's Sporting Goods may if you have one in the area. They expanded the line recently in my local store to Champions, from Fury only. I have quite a few near me, opposed to 45 mins in either way to hit BPS. Quote

Quite a few of them did - the one close to me didn't though...they moved to a new location and have about as much there as they always did. 1 Quote
T2DM Posted July 29, 2023 Author Posted July 29, 2023 Thanks everyone, when shopping for rods, I'd like to at least examine the rod first and pick the one that is not damaged, or the blank is not crooked. I've been burned by buying rods online then shipping them back cause of the sometimes not so great build quality. BPS at my area sometimes carry St. Croix rods well above $350 price point. They also carry Gloomis GCX series, Zodias, etc., just kind of weird not seeing any Dobyns when at least in my area Academy carries some model but not the model I'm interested in. Quote

I've bought Mojo Bass and Victory rods from ALF, including used, and they've all been 10/10 Even the couple used reels I got from them were excellent...little boat rash but mechanically perfect. ALF is my first stop for rods... 3 Quote

I also tried their trade in program a few times and was happy with the outcome. 1 Quote

They're currently running a special - buy used and get 30% of what you spend as a gift card. Caused me to order a used Mojo 6'10" MLXF...was wanting one anyway, and this pushed me over the edge...especially since the new Mojos are (IMO) ugly. 2 Quote

LonnieP Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 BPS has a very poor selection of rods, not just Dobyns but all brands 2 Quote
detroit1 Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Went to 2 Dicks near me this weekend, 2 short isles of fishing stuff. Looks like they teamed up with those Googans, as half of their lure selection was googan, and mystery tackle box crap (uh, stuff). I kid you not, they had a back wall from floor to ceiling full of yeti tumblers 10 yards wide. Half of their "outdoor" section were coolers and tankards. I don't think they had 20 rods, with half of them with a reel. Cheaper combo rigs. No need to visit them again... Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Since some are talking about DSG, my local DSG has a decent selection of stuff, baits from Strike King, Rapala, Yamamoto, and some other good stuff. Its just almost twice as much as i usually pay for those baits other places. Rows of those green companys stuff like others have said. The rod selection is alright with stuff from Lews, Dobyns, and some Ugly Stiks. They have alot of cheap budget combos and reels but they also carry some more expensive reels from Lews, Shimano, and Daiwa. 40 minutes away theres another DSG that had a Field and Stream merged in it (this was like a mini Cabelas/BPS) but they decided to close down that part and reopen it as a DSG with a rock climbing wall and other sports stuff. Which was a terrible idea, they are going to lose around atleast 500k a year in the sales from the stuff they decided to no longer sell and spent another 300k atleast in redoing the store. As well as closing down from Jan-August. So lose over a million dollars to have free sports simulation areas and a rock wall? This store had hundreds of rods, really good rods too. They carried many rods from Dobyns including the 806 swimbait rod. This store carried alot of stuff that wasnt on DSG website or other stores. They had dozens and dozens of Dobyns rods. Tons and tons of really nice reels and their bait selection was the size of a church. They havent reopened yet but im not sure if they will remove their large selection of fishing gear like they did with almost everything else. But for BPS like others have stated, they can make alot more on their on stuff than others. While they do carry several good brands, they are starting to have more and more of their house brand stuff. Their sales used to be very good, but now almost all of it is their baits or rods and reels, not much from other companys. Quote
