The inputs that go into a fish to induce it to bite are numerous as covered in the most recent In Fisherman article, hard data, not just opinions.  Size, sound, shape, color, movement, etc.  How they all are prioritized is up to the specific fish, and hence our challenge to think (they don't really think, they instinctively react) like the fish.

Folks catch bass on outlandish things, that don't imitate color, background, or anything sometimes.                    My lake doesn't have any pink worms in it, but, sometimes, bass hit pink worms. Other days, they're picky about what they want. I think only the bass know why.

I would vote presentation.

" One could argue " that casting accuracy and bait placement would fall under presentation as well, which is very important.

Couyon (coo-yawn)

A Cajun French term used to describe a foolish person.

Yeah pretty much you're not mimicking anything.  You're making a bass bite because of anger, territorial nature, fear, surprise, curiosity, hunger (least often I'd wager), so it has very little to do with matching anything and more to do with getting their attention without alerting them to YOU.  Presentation matters a lot more than color with regards to your poll but in terms of your post, I'd say neither color nor matching the action of the food matters that much at all.

@Catt I'm officially appropriating the term couyon.

Back on topic... Not sure what a night crawler represents in terms of natural forage, but I put a hurting on just about every species of fish using them growing up.  It's not natural forage, not the right color, and I'm not in control of presentation.

I get what you’re saying, you do have to make a choice while picking a bait.  I have seen where it makes a difference to use a certain color or not.  Sometimes they will bite black, blue, green, etc.   other times, it has mattered to narrow it down to a specific color.  Same for presentation.   I have been on a school where I start with a football jig, switch to a Neko, then a Ned to keep catching fish.  I think fish are like us at times.   We all ain’t eating the same thing at a buffet.   Now that could just be my bass sized brain “reacting” to the question at hand.  ?

color matters big time on St Clair.  A guide once told me he needs only one color on St Clair, green.  We have found that the greenish Canada Craw TRD ned regularly outfishes other colors that don't have any green in them.

Agree with both of these--find a bass when they're feeling angry any almost any presentation/color will work (as long as they notice it). Find them when they're feeling lazy and you might have to deadstick a senko about 2" from their nose.

Wait who is the couyon, you or the OP. Just trying to keep score here. LOL

My opinion is color means less than action/presentation, unless we are talking ultra clear or really stained water. Nothing in the wild that looks my redbug and/or plum 12" ol monster worm, but when I drop it in the right brush pile or shake it just right next to a good drop off seems to get hammered.

When plastic worms hit the market, the only color available was natural worm.  I caught my first bass on artificial using a natural colored Creme worm with a front spinner.  That was around 1960.  A year or so later, we discovered purple worms and thought they were magic.    Since then, I have fished probably every color worm you can think of.  I have seen days when pink was the only color that could get a bite.  Other days, it may be Merthiolate or bright chartreuse.  Nothing in nature is this color.  Bass bite lures for reasons other than food.   Curiosity, territorial protection, quick reaction and just plain anger all go into the response.  In murky water, I start with dark worms.  In clear water, I start with translucent green hues.  This is where fishing tournaments can help you.  It gives you a chance to obtain inside local knowledge that is not generally available.  That is until everyone gets the message and you have to start over.

This post reminds me of the guy that caught a huge bass on a chicken nugget. Sometimes, being lucky, and being in the right spot at the right time is where it's at.

I don’t know about you guys, but to me  everyone has their preferences from their successes.

Is color important?..Yes

Could it make a difference in getting bit or not?…Sure

How many times have you kept the same lure and just changed the color and get bit where before you wouldn’t??…Many times

But not always to the degree where it is the one, singular, overall difference maker when looking to make a change.

For me, the correct presentation of the correct lure choice all things considered is more important

If the bait was something like a Whopper Plopper then color might rule, because there's not much you can do with the presentation - it's either on or off. On the other hand, whether color even matters on a Whopper Plopper is another question.
