i dont think anyone likes to skunk.  we can all speak to the mental well being of just being out there, and having fun.  that line about the worst day of fishing being better than the best day of work...hmmm,  i have had some REALLY good days at work.  and some BAAAADDD fishing days.  :D

but that first fish is almost magical to me.  i cant even put it into words.   when i push off into the water..i always whisper a prayer for a safe fishing trip, and if there is any leftover..maybe a first fish.  hahah...

I'm with you.  I hate a skunk.   My goal is first, a fish,  second, a bass, then....multiple big bass.

Anyone who says a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work never had their boat sink

Or truck.  I watched my uncle back his trailer into the lake to get his boat out once, and his parking brake failed and the truck slipped into lake.

Still, my best day at work was when a construction crew down the road cut a buried power line and the power company said it would take a day to fix it.  So I got paid to go fishing that day.

Always like getting the skunk out of the way.

Skunks are humbling, effect appetite, mood, marriage and can have long term effects on health.

On the bright side, my fishing partner can be loud and obnoxious at times.......a good skunking makes for a quiet ride home. ?

As long as it’s not on the first cast, I’m thrilled with the first one of the day. ?

I always breathe a sigh of relief when I catch the first fish.  No matter what else happens that day I know I've caught at least one fish.

I couldn’t agree more. And speaking for myself, I know if needs be there’d be something for the table that night.

Love that relief!   I often tell myself I will not leave the lake until I catch one (or one last fish).  These can turn into late nights or long hot days.  I have had to give up a couple times (absolutely haunts me when I don’t meet the goal).  I have had buddies with me when I say and they threaten to swim to shore.

Greetings and Happy Friday All,

@Darth-Baiter all fish on-line to me are great, and yes that first one is awesome. I try to enjoy each of those special moments.

I do what I can to avoid a skunk. Not too difficult when you have the low bar to simply catch fish and enjoy the experience. Since I'm using that UL gear and small soft plastics I can generally find something interested to chomp down on it. At my local waters that typically is large mouth bass, green sunfish, bluegills, catfish, and trout during the winter months or up in the alpine waters of AZ.

@Bankbeater I fully agree, scoring that first fish and getting the slimy treatment is GOOD. Somehow it makes the experience that much more robust.

I know for me getting to fish-able water requires some travel and prep due to the AZ weather. Be nice to be able to simply grab the rig and go but never quite that easy, at least not for me here. Usually there involves safety gear needed to deal with the too hot, too cold, too windy, too wet, and etc. Also hauling a good supply of water is a must. Hydration pack with me at all times, with more in vehicle.

Catching fish make all that effort worth it!  Be well and Cheers!

I feel good about getting the last bass of the day....and it wasn’t the 1st.

Fishing isn't fun to me at all but is a means to the end which is catching.  I am not having fun if i am not catching fish which is probably why I am pretty obsessive about catching anytime I am out.

Rule #1 - Don’t blank :leisures-and-sports-076:

I don’t care if it’s the first cast that day or the last (I really prefer the first). After that, it’s catch as many more as I can.

Blanking does bother me. The reason is I know someone else was killing it that day and I couldn’t put the puzzle pieces together.

the first last and all of them in between are a great feeling. The first is 100% a great sigh of relief. Getting home safely and everything in one piece is even better.

I'm not sure if I've had four or five one-bass days in 2023, but I've flirted with skunks many times. You all have seen that Maine is full of bass, so it's pretty amazing and sad that I've struggled four or five times to catch just one. One particular bog is mostly to blame. It has big bass, but so few of them. Still, I keep going and keep hoping. This is me looking at the bog:

Don't mind a skunk as long as they are rare. They often come with good lessons.

I love catching that first fish while exploring a new body of water, especially one you haven't heard anything about. It's like, "Awesome, there actually are fish here!"
