I'm not sure if this is the place to post this or not, but I'm leaving next Sunday for a week-long fishing trip, and last year when we went, I ended up wearing out my right wrist on all the fish we caught. Does anyone use a wristbrace when fishing, or can recommend one? I wasn't sure if one from Walmart would suffice, since I feel like a wristbrace for fishing should somehow be constructed to give me feel of the reel and be lower profile in the palming area. Could be wrong.

I don't know about for fishing specifically since most braces are going to wrap around the thumb/palm area. I can vouch for this brace. I would honestly just suck it up during fishing and wear the brace the rest of the time and to sleep.

Athletic wrist wrap supports that don’t go around your thumb may work. Casting should be mostly wrist motion!

When i first got into fly fishing last year several people who did it recommended any over the counter wrap/brace sold at your local pharmacy. I dont think they would work very well for casting from the side, in fly fishing its straight up and straight down (or back and front) so overhand casts, etc, would probably be okay if you go that way.

Thanks, fellas. 4-5 days of salmon fishing with several hundred casts a day and several fish a day can wear out the ole wrists, even on this 34-year-old!

@Ryanralston07: you sure got that right! One additional thing you might want to consider is getting arm compression sleeves. When I fished for salmon with heavy jigs and the like one day, my forearms were very tired and sore (akin to tennis elbow). The day was hot too. But I knew I still had to get out there the next day. The next day was overcast and cold and so I brought along my cycling arm warmers because it was too cold to fish without them and I didn’t want to were a jacket. I fished for about 7 hours straight and no pain or soreness even though I had pain and soreness before starting that day. I concluded it must have been those arm warmers had acted like compression sleeves. I was like, wow. Dang. And I thought that compression crap was junk. Not anymore. One other thing some people do is fish the opposite way when one side “gets tired,” lol. Many use spinning reels for that reason. I just bring an extra opposite handed bc reel. ?

Some times the wrist pain radiates up into your forearm muscle. They make a clam shell brace of rigid plastic & Velcro straps that really helps with the problem.

Gonna have to try compression! I definitely need to bring a right-handed reel to help with that, just hate to buy one just in case, but I think it's a necessity at this point so I don't have to stop fishing. I used a Tatula CT last year for my reel when fishing for silvers, sockeye, pink, and chum, on a 7'1" Basspro Johnny Morris Platinum Signature rod just to see how it'd handle one of those salmon in the creek we were in - honestly, I was skeptical, but that setup handled them like a champ and gave me better feel and accuracy than the spinning setup everyone else used. I wore folks out fishing, even though everyone was skeptical about the setup, but after catching over 100 fish on it in a few days, guys were getting interested and even tried it out a few times when I took a break lol. I used to only use spinning gear, but I'll never use spinning gear again when I can use a baitcasting setup...without wrist pain lol

Have a link or picture of that?

Push Sports wrist support.

Back in the day all we had was adhesive tape to wrap wrist and ankles with, got to be very good at it as a gymnasts.

Today lots of excellent sporting wraps available.

@Ryanralston07 I have seen them in drug stores & Walmart. It' two pieces of hard plastics like a clam shell that compresses your forearm with Velcro straps. It has saved a few trips for me when casting heavy baits for a week of long days fishing.
