I’m not interested in the reel and won’t comment on the overall quality of the reel. That being said, since when does having more data about anything hurt? I may not find knowing my precise casting distance particularly helpful but in what way could it possibly hurt someone to know it?

It doesn't hurt.  Maybe the ego of big brands fanboys.

Like it or not, I bet this is a peak into the future of the sport.  It doesn't appeal to me, but I can see where you could get some really useful data, if it works as advertised.  I can see it now, "KK is junk its trying to tell me I can only cast my 110 60 feet when I know Ive been casting them at least 40 yards for years."

If this is the "future of fishing" then I guess it's more important than ever to buy quality and service it regularly so it lasts decades. There's a lot of things in this world you can't do without a smartphone, fishing better not become one of them.

Don’t like it? Don’t use it.

(I am incredibly amused by the double standard of how much crap people probably have on their boats, but the reel?  Unnatural!  You kids get off my lawn!)

Nailed it...

Someone on a BFS fishing group said some weeks ago he was casting 4g beyond the 43yd mark...

And I’m sure you were quick to deride him about It.

This thread reminds me of the failed Anglr app. Lots of people talked about it, but nobody used it.  And the end of the day, it recorded meaningless stats.

And that bluetooth Abu rod that paired with it with one simple click.... That one got clearanced out pretty quickly.

The funny thing is the same people who bash the proposal, are the same who praise the digital ''intelligent'' casting system, who casts worse than centrifugal ones, distance-wise, and with less control than simple linear mag one, for at least 4-5 generations.

I’ve never even owned a DC reel and won’t but ok.

I just returned from ICAST. 2 things I noted:

1. There aren't any electronic reels like this one.  So that tells me the industry isn't going in that direction.

2. I saw a new reel company from Sweden that had a nearly backlash-free reel that uses all mechanics - nothing "digital".  I threw a 1/4oz weight as hard and as far as I could and only had one loop of line in the spool.  I had a similar experience with the new Ark reel, even though they don't tout it as an anti-backlash reel. It just has extreme fine-tuning of the casting controls (60 setting combinations).  I also saw the new GF Seviin baitcasting reel has similar casting controls

I'm not saying "digital" reels like Kastking's will never happen.  But it seems there isn't a market for them, and there are now advances in the mechanics of reels that challenge the need for digital anti-backlash reels.

Indeed. It's the same purpose, apparently. But the IM Z intelligent features are JDM-only, restricted at software level.

I’ll archive this thread into a time capsule and let my grandchildren laugh reading while they tell their fishing gear to catch fish more to the left while sitting at home on a moon of Jupiter.

I’d rather have a smart lipless that can unsnag itself when I ask.  That’s the pipe dream.  They could charge $50 and it’d be a money saver for me.

I'm not buying it.  At some point you are going to have to call tech support for this thing.
