Ever have that happen? I’ve got a $40-ish voucher at FishUSA from my birthday (returning something). I don’t NEED anything at all, but I just HAVE to spend it on something, right??

Me and the soft bait monkey have a relationship already, a pretty deep, intense one. So, no soft plastics for me.

I have pretty much everything I need to fish. What I don’t have are larger swim baits/glidebaits/etc (I fish the magdraft freestyle and love them - largest bait I throw). Mainly don’t fish them because I don’t know how to, when to and where to. It’s just something I haven’t ventured into. Heaviest rod I have can throw up to a 1 1/2oz. If I wanted to venture into the world of “larger” swim baits, where would I start?

Your rod can definitely throw s-waver 168's and gantarel jr's if you wanna try some hard baits.  It's hard to throw much of anything over 6" on a jig rod.  6" creeper trash fish,  5" burrito and 6" scottsboro swimbaits if you wanna try some other soft swimmers that have worked well for me.

I know what ya mean, I’ll get a BPS gift card, I swear it’s like the sirens calling the sailors into the reef.
I’m like, do I spent it on one item or a bunch of lures or plastics?

Yep.  My check was $300 more than anticipated.  You can check the 'latest tackle purchase' thread to see where it went ?

The rod you have now can throw some stuff, but if you really want to get into the larger stuff think about upgrading the rod to one that can handle atleast 2oz to 4-6oz, if not more.

A 150/200 size reel should work just make sure it can hold enough 20-30lb line (Big Game mono is a popular option on here). If you have the money get a 300 sized reel.

I would recommend to try budget ones before going all in, here are my budget suggestions.

Soft Swimbaits.

You already have the Magdraft so a Savage Gear line thru or jig hook trout swimbait would be similar to fish. They also make some small Pike swimbaits, as well as Bluegill/Crappie ones.

Hard Swimbaits.

Spro trout swimbaits 6" or 8" these are a really good option if you have trout in your lakes, and even if you dont.

Storm Arashi Swimmer 7" this is a bit more expensive but is sometimes on sale around $18-24.

Berkley has a hard swimbait out that was made by someone else for awhile, not much talk about it here.

6th Sense has the Trace in 5" and 6". The actions good and the paint is amazing. (Not exactly budget but goes on sale alot during the year).

Glide Baits.

13 Glidesdale is a really cool one.

River2Sea S Waver is good option as well.

Wake Baits.

The Bio Shad is a really good option, comes in 2 sizes. (Some people say this is like the old Strike King one they no longer make).

Most hard/soft swimbaits come in floating, slow sink, and fast sink options.

Thanks all. I think I’m going to go with a couple of s-wavers. Another option is the Megabass suwitch. Don’t know anything about it, but the concept is cool.

I say go for it because it’s like a gift card. Only good at that place anyway.

If it were someone handing me two $20.00 bills and I really didn’t need anything I’d put it in the bank.

Money?  What's that.  Every day when I get home from work Mrs B says "give me all your money, and don't let me catch you with any more"  .

What is this word "Money" you speak of? Is that some ancient language? It is totally unfamiliar to me.

Berkley’s new Power Bait CullShad is 1 1/2 oz, 6” swimbait.

Currently 1st gen being recalled the 2nd release should be worth risking your free money on.

Ok…update to topic. Went to my local cabelas today to look for a different rod. I had an “extra Mojo Bass 7’-6” MHF. I intended on exchanging it for a bass X XXH that rated 2-5oz. Well, lo and behold, apparently, they unloaded a truck last night. So, instead of the bass x, I picked up a 7’-10” HF Mojo Bass. It’s rated at 1-4oz. So now I can throw anything from 1/8 to 4oz.

so, that may mean I want other things now. I saw where FishUSA was now going to sell the Shimano armaboost. I am curious about this…

Thanks,

Kevin
