NY state record smallmouth was just caught in Cayuga this spring.

Our club just fished Cayuga and we only had 1 Smallmouth weighed in, in 2 days. 38 guys and 1 smallie. The smallies seemed to be 60+' down and didn't really want to cooperate. The LM weights were great though.

did anyone see what the 40 pound bag fisherman was catching them om-seemed to me he was careful to never show the lure when he removed it. was using a baitcaster, so im guessing not a small finesse bait??

I don't know but to me a river fish is completely different and deserves it's own category compared to a lake fish.  I have yet to catch a smallie on a lake because I prefer rivers and I'd love to get a 5lber on a river.....been within a few ounces on multiple occasions. At least now I have a few places I should put on my bucket list to visit

They are kind of the same here because the river and the lake are one and the same . We got plenty of river fish pushing 5 lbs but they can avoid capture for long stretches , I usually bump into maybe 3-4 a year
