Tackleholic Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 I fish solid body frogs a lot, usually prefer them over buzzbaits. Sometimes they roll over and retrieve with the hook point facing down. I usually use a screwlock hook, and sometimes will employ one with a 1/16 belly weight to correct the problem. I'm curious if some of you have other methods of making them remain upright. Quote

Im fishing open water in rivers so its fine but it is annoying. It helps to let it settle before starting the retrieve. I also think some toads are more prone to roll over than others. 2 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted July 9, 2023 Super User Posted July 9, 2023 If that’s the way they want to run, just rig them “upside down” and they’ll run right ? 1 2 Quote
FishTax Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I’ve experienced this. No great solution but am experimenting with different brands and following this thread. I think it’s the strike king toads I’ve had this problem with on a 4/0 ewg heavy hook. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 10, 2023 Super User Posted July 10, 2023 I only throw Stanley's Ribbit & Zoom's Horny Toad. Slowing down solved that problem for me. I reel just fast enough to keep it above water. 3 Quote

VolFan Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Start your t-rig juuust below the midline of the front. It keels them up just a touch. 4 Quote
huZZah Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I actually haven’t noticed that I don’t get bites when they turn over. Like, I quit even worrying about it cause it didn’t seem to matter if it was staring down at a fish. Boom, splash, fish. 1 Quote
GRiver Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I use Bass Pro’s and haven’t had that problem yet. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Used to have that problem with rage toads. You can either use a heavier hook or keel weighted hooks. Double takes work really well too. 1 Quote

Not a bite issue so much as when fishing over cover the hook point is susceptible to getting hung up. Quote
FishTax Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Bass talk live podcast just did a good episode on these and talked about different ways to use nail weights on toads along with retrievals, etc. I'm going to try to find the video version because I listened in the car and felt like I missed parts from audio only. 1 Quote

Super User PhishLI Posted July 13, 2023 Super User Posted July 13, 2023 These always run correctly. Keitech Noisy Flapper Frog 5pk - Tackle Warehouse Rigged on this hook in 6/0. Berkley Fusion19 Hooks Swimbait 4pk - Tackle Warehouse Also, it casts like a bullet. Slow fish it on the bottom as a bite size swimbait. Killer. Comes through grass and muck great. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted July 13, 2023 Super User Posted July 13, 2023 Go to hollow body and squeeze them occasionally when they fill with water. Throw mainly Spro bronze eye. Quote
