MediumMouthBass Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 My Dobyns Fury is one of my favorite rods, but because of how many people break theirs ive put it in fishing storage and havent used it yet this season, i was just thinking about getting it to use for texas rigs and now heres another post about you breaking 4 of your Dobyns rods. I have some nice/expensive rods but am afraid of using them for this reason, so ill stick with using the $55 Daiwas for fishing, they are cheaper to replace if i break them. Quote

GetFishorDieTryin Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Ive got a buddy who broke a Swimbait Fury on a Bluefish last year. He warrantied it, got the replacement and broke the replacement within weeks of receiving it. Quote

You bought the rods to fish with. Just fish 'em, brother. There's a LOT more rods that don't ever break than do break. You just don't hear those stories. I mean, what else are you gonna do with them? 6 Quote
Super User Bird Posted July 8, 2023 Super User Posted July 8, 2023 More people wreck Honda's than they do Lamborghini's, why ?........ more people driving them. I'll be throwing Spinnerbaits FEARLESSLY on the 703C ? 1 Quote
Texas Flood Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 My Shimano Compre broke my fall and itself earlier this year on some rocks. I was quite sad since the rod is discontinued. Quote
JediAmoeba Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Most rods eventually break - I am pretty rough on my stuff and after a few years they all seem to break. But nothing breaks like a Duckett rod! Quote
fin Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Most of my rods have been broken by stupidity. My most recent was a 10 year-old Cherrywood that has landed hundreds of fish. I was unhooking a fish and the fish slipped out my hands and fell to the ground while still hooked. I think the only one I’ve had break half way down was a Zebco. Quote
ironbjorn Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 I once casted a Champ XP casting rod from the bank and absolutely hammered the Sierra spinning rod I had propped up behind me. The sound of that crack, I was sure I broke one or both. But nope. And they have never given me a problem since. I see a lot of people mentioning broken Dobyns rods, but even on my best (accidental) effort I couldn't break mine. 2 Quote

Super User Spankey Posted July 8, 2023 Super User Posted July 8, 2023 I’ve broken two Avid St. Croix Rods over the years. Clearly stupidity on my part. My first one was by high sticking a fish that was nice but no state record by a long shot. Was trying to show off in front of my dad. I broke a rod for being stupid. My second rod I broke was by doing something dumb also. I should have just boat flipped a fish in. Really should have just lip grabbed him or netted him but without even thinking about what I was doing I reached and grabbed the rod blank about 2 1/2 from the tip, other hand at the reel seat and lifted the fish aboard. Rod snapped. Both times they snapped like a fire cracker going off. Both times I managed to not loose the fish and St. Croix replaced my rods. Quote

I bought 4 at $39.99-$59.99 on clearance. Told my buddies and they flocked in and bought some too. I wish I would have stocked up more when I could. ?? SCORE!! You have to love Cabela's clearance! Years ago my buddy worked at Cabela's HQ, when there was only one retail store. I LOVED going in to the Bargain Cave. Kid in a candy store!! 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 9, 2023 Super User Posted July 9, 2023 I've broken a rod in a tailgate, fallen down a hill with one, snapped one while pulling a snag loose without enough slack in the line, and dropped a rod while putting on a new reel. Never on a hookset. 2 Quote

I won't be buying any more rods from that company. Customer service is fantastic, and it seems to me, it needs to be. Several of my Ark rods have been put through the ringer with nary a whimper, I couldn't be happier with them. I thought sure I was gonna snap the tip off an Invoker flippin stick the other day while trying to poke a snag loose. I got the rod tip stuck down there too, LOL, and had to pull pretty hard to free it. Still good to go. It took FAR less to break those Sierra's. The one that broke on me was also a Sierra. They did send another same day no charge. 1 Quote

Customer service is top notch. I don't feel the same way about the products. There are lighter, more sensitive, more durable blanks, with quality hardware, available elswhere for considerably less money. You pay for that great warranty up front. 4 Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Just an observation; over the years I've seen more posts from guys that have broken multiple rods, than the occasional one from someone that's broken one for the first time. Equipment failures are part of the overall equation. Multiple failures on the same piece of equipment makes one wonder if it is in fact the equipment. 2 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 9, 2023 Super User Posted July 9, 2023 In my life time I’ve broken almost as many bones as rods. Quote
Woody B Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 I haven't broke a rod this year. (not counting guides) I will occasionally break one though. I'll high stick the heck out of one doing slack line hook sets and boat flipping fish. I suspect the stretch in mono keeps me from breaking a BUNCH of rods. Quote

These rods were actually in a rack on the floor. I had my younger daughter running to the scanner checking prices on each rod. She loved it!! I had a Cabelas employee ask me if there were more because he wanted some at that price!! 1 Quote

I would just be interested to know. I think I treat my equipment well, and would like to know if I need to change something to avoid this. It is not a big deal. I bought another rod to replace it and actually might buy another as a backup since I found a great deal. Quote

I have broke more than a few over the years and I believe maybe two of those were because of rod failures. All the rest were my fault. I definitely would not be the one to tell what happened to your rod. Maybe you could post a pic of the rod break and I am sure a member here could help diagnose it. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 10, 2023 Super User Posted July 10, 2023 Setting at water level in a kayak high sticking is easy if you raise the rod tip straight up hook setting. 1. Set the drag using a dead weight like 3 pint bottles of water in a plastic bag to = 3 lbs and lift the bag of battles off the floor using rigged rod/reel/line combo. 3 power rod 3 lbs is close to max drag, 4 power use 4 lbs. Never try to lift dead weight with the rod tip above 45 degrees, 90 degrees being straight or “high stick”. Tom Quote
