I felt a bass pick up my bait.  I set the hook and felt the hook/bait lock up. I “think” it went into wood, maybe.  I thought it was a  big one, so I leaned into it.  It snapped halfway down.  I’ve snapped 4 rods since I took up fishing again at the beginning of the pandemic.  All four rods are Dobyns Fury 703’s.  I’ve replaced a few w the DOBYNS $70 program.    One was the direct result of blocking a tungsten flying back at me.

this time I put it in the Marina’s Dumpster.  I’ve had GREAT TIMES with that very humble rod.  Great times and countless fish.  I use it mostly ;y for light t-rigs and finesse jigs.    Like the other 3x, I called my wife.  She said, “no big deal, you had a rod tube delivered today”.

it’s all goood.  I have one Fury 733 left. I throw jerkbaits with it.

oh well.  Things happen.   But none of my buds break their Fury rods.

I just snapped my favorite football jig rod, but on a fish.  ( I got the fish in with half a rod, it was just under 3 lbs).  I was using 17 lb. Fluoro and had made a long cast.  Felt the fish pin it to the bottom, then pick it up, reeled down and set it………..POW!!   Broke my heart.  I ordered a new one ( it only took a few days to arrive from Omnia), but I am not sure I love it yet.  I am going to order another rod tomorrow to try out.

I haven’t broken many rods.  I hope it is the last one for the year.

The only rods Ive ever broken were St. Croix. both setting on spotted bass with a jig.

Broke one, got a new one and the next year broke that one. Trashed them and never went back to that brand.

Luckily Ive no issues with the gear Im using now.

Some folks just don't know their own strength. I've permanently bent 1,000 lb barbells lifting weights and never broke a rod on a a fish.

Man @Darth-Baiter, that stinks! I'm still fishing Cabela's branded rods purchased in the 1990's.

Not sure what I would do if I broken one. Would be sadness for sure.

I've broken 2 rods, about 65 or 70 years ago;  both times I closed a door on them.  The lesson has never been forgotten.

You might want to try setting it precisely with a scale.  With a Dobyns 703 I would set it to 4 pounds or less depending on what line I was using.   I appreciate an enthusiastic hook set but when you’re breaking rods it can get expensive. ?

I would think high sticking would cause it to break closer to the tip not in the middle of the rod.  I can’t say that I’ve ever tested that theory.

I love Dobyns and I've never broken one of their rods, but I see a lot of people breaking them on the Dobyns Facebook page.

That is the rod I broke.  A Cabelas Archnid.  It was a $200 rod retail.  They were awesome.  I bought 4 at $39.99-$59.99 on clearance.  Told my buddies and they flocked in and bought some too.  I wish I would have stocked up more when I could. ??

Never broke a rod on a hookset. Low ceilings have sent a few to their grave though.

I snapped a Cherrywood on a hook set back in the early 80's, that's been it.

I use to create a wake on a hook set but no longer SWING for the fences. ?

Reading the threat title, I thought you meant you broke 4 in the same day. I was gonna say that's a very bad day. ?

The only rod I’ve ever had break on me while fishing was also a Dobyns. First cast even.

I've broken a couple Sierra's. Both my fault, but it wasn't exactly hard to do. I won't be buying any more rods from that company. Customer service is fantastic, and it seems to me, it needs to be.

Several of my Ark rods have been put through the ringer with nary a whimper, I couldn't be happier with them. I thought sure I was gonna snap the tip off an Invoker flippin stick the other day while trying to poke a snag loose. I got the rod tip stuck down there too, LOL, and had to pull pretty hard to free it. Still good to go. It took FAR less to break those Sierra's.
