There is no too long or too short, just the right time. Recreational anglers that adopt a competetive type fishing style when there is no need for it, IMO are making a mistake. Fish the moment sounds cool, but those moments add up to hours, days, months, years, decades and finally a life time of bass fishing fun and knowledge. Nothing wrong with pacing yourself. A-Jay I’ve noticed that I fish with 2 different mindsets when competitive fishing and just fun fishing. Most days fun fishing is more productive, maybe because I’m not expecting myself to catch a big bag, I’m just out there to have a good time. Or it could be that when I evaluate my day it’s not in lbs/oz and more about fun had. I’ve also noticed I do better in competitive settings when I show up with the mindset of “I’m just gonna go fish today and let the cards stack as they will” Quote
Pat Brown Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 If you catch a few fish on a jig going through an area, go back through the area with a worm or creature bait and you'll often catch different fish. Same applies for reaction baits. I definitely start low and sneaky and then if they seem eager to play I work them harder with faster moving and more assertive baits further up in the water column. Different retrieves and casting angles are always a good idea if you've got the time to make it happen on visible cover and offshore structure. 2 Quote

I always attack a spot from different angles before moving on and it's paid off more often than not. A dock pattern is very productive on a lake I fish as there are so many that are close to deep water. I'll follow a boat or two down the shore, make my casts from close to shore out under the dock rather than sitting off the front of the dock casting in. I picked up my biggest smallie doing exactly that two weeks ago. Angles can be a deal breaker. I’ve noticed on my home lake that I can hit brush piles from different angles, one may produce no bites, while another may load the boat 1 1 Quote

I love it when the first response I hear is, well KVD does this. Ok! Well you ain't KVD & you ain't in the Classic. Slow down ? When fishing offshore structures I seldom drive over them scanning for bass, I approach from casting distance. My fish finder is tied to the end of my rod! 4 Quote

I guess the point in the video I was referencing is do you go to a lay down and cast at it for 30 minutes without catching? Yet I myself would go to an offshore spot and maybe not spend 30 minutes but much more than a shallow piece of cover for whatever reason. I’m not saying this is the gospel truth I was just pointing out a different perspective. 1 Quote

Right back at ya and me too. With so much super visual how to available to new bassheads, it's probably super easy to want to emulate at least some of it. But finding our own way almost always pays off in the end. #supergratifying A-Jay 5 Quote
