Reel Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 Here are a few things you can do to correct the problem: Brakes get changed when people look at a reel in the store. Make sure you have (depending) 2 on /2 off or 3 on/ 3 off. In house, slowly pull the braid from the reel in free spool to see if it hesitate because it dug in during the retrieve and you did not see it. This happens when using a frog. Even if it's new, oil the bearings and cast control, also the trace for the brakes with a very light oil. One is right handed the other is left handed: do you use the same casting motion and the same hand to cast ? Even if you have the same number of brakes on, there are two more adjustments to make- the brake dial and the cast control knob. How are they adjusted ? Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted July 14, 2023 Author Posted July 14, 2023 @Stale KracKer ive had the spool tension all the way from extremely loose to very tight and in between. @Reel Ive tried adjusting the internal brakes since making this post originally, the only way this thing wont backlash is if the brakes are on very high, which results in the same distance of around 20-30' because of how over braked it is now, anything lower and it backlashes alot. The braided line doesnt hesitate but thanks for giving me that idea in case it ever does. I will have to have it oiled and even try changing the spool to the other one because those seem like the only other things to do. I cast the same whether its a right or left, i have reels from both side retrieves and cast good with either. There is no brake dial on the base SLX, and the spool tension ive tried "ive had the spool tension all the way from extremely loose to very tight and in between." Quote
Reel Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 I have three other versions of the SLX and they work fine with both types of line. There might be a part missing in the cast control cap . I wish I could help you more. Take it back to where you bought it. They might have a solution. Quote

Have it oiled? Aye yai yai. Just swap the line from reel to reel for god's sake. I could do this in 10 minutes taking a break in between to clip my toenails. All this pondering when you can figure out whether it's the line, reel, or you, in mere minutes. Come on. You can do this. You can. I'm pulling for ya. 1 Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted July 14, 2023 Author Posted July 14, 2023 @PhishLI im sure you could. My SLX's are in 2 different locations right now, so having them together to swap spools may take a week (i have my baits/lures and rods/reels in different places and arent all at my house). Also dont have reel oil available here today, havent had a need for it until now. I have 23 baitcasting reels and 41 reels combined so im not in a absolute hurry to move mountains to fix this reel today. This post was made for 1 reason mainly and i guess i didnt word it correctly. I wanted to know if having 2 exact reels, with different line (one braid and one hybrid or mono/fluoro) could be so different on similar or the same braking settings. This is only my 2nd casting reel with braided line, so i have very little experience with how it should cast/act. I have bought a couple higher lb spools during sales and wanted to try spooling some reels. But since this SLX with braid was this difficult to cast, not knowing if the reel had an issue or if this was the norm for casting reels with braided line (since again i dont have much experience with it) i made a post here asking if it could be the line or reel. I appreciate the comments about how to fix it, and now i have some ideas on how to fix it when i have time to do so. But now i know that most of the people commenting on this have braided line on their reels and can get good distance without issues. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted July 15, 2023 Super User Posted July 15, 2023 The only thing I can say is try the line on the other reel on the problematic SLX and then try the same lures on the same rod. 50# braid should cast well so I think it will still be problematic but I’m at a loss Quote
optimator Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 You’ve got 41 reels and haven’t had a need for oil? Does not compute. Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted July 15, 2023 Author Posted July 15, 2023 @optimator this SLX is at my house along with some other rods/reels i dont use much. I have most of the stuff i use frequently elsewhere so thats where all the oil is. Havent had a need for it at the house until now. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 15, 2023 Super User Posted July 15, 2023 I have been using Break Free CLP for decades as a reel lubricant on level wind worm gear and spool ends for on the water cleaning lubricant. 2 oz bottle with straw applicator is easy to use a drop on the gear or spool ends works wonders.
