Super User webertime Posted July 7, 2023 Super User Posted July 7, 2023 Depending on the reel. Steez HL or TDZ, I'll spend on. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 7, 2023 Super User Posted July 7, 2023 Fortunately I haven't needed much in the way of an actual 'repair' on my reels in a while. Mostly just a worn worm gear here & there. That said, for me and especially the casting reels, they are an investment. One that I'm not looking to replace right away. So to that end I have mine /cleaned/lubed & serviced every couple of years by @Delaware Valley Tackle. Service is top notch and offered at a fair price. If there's repair's needed, they will take care of that too. What does take a pretty big bite out of crime is the insured shipping both ways. However if something happens to the package en route, having them covered for the full cost might at least get new replacements. Without it, the reels would be a total loss. Not a fan of that. So I bite the bullet and drop the $$$. Replacement cash might take a while to receive but it's certainly better than the empty 'sorry' a USPS / UPS shipper would offer otherwise. A-Jay 7 Quote

ike8120 Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Depends on the reel, may be cheaper in the long run to buy new. 2 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted July 7, 2023 Super User Posted July 7, 2023 What's the alternative cost? Half might be right for a nice reel that is in otherwise good shape and I can expect that half to keep the reel going for a good few years yet. If you're talking about a Shimano Sahara 4000 that cost me $60 15 years ago, I wouldn't spend anything on it to fix the gears I got sand in. Even if it was $30, I'd rather just spend $75 and get a new reel. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 That’s a valid concern but a personal call. Depends on the cost of the reel, distance, carrier chosen etc. Here’s a tip: don’t use all you can fit Priority Mail boxes unless you can pack them really heavy. 99% of the time weight and dimensions are a better deal. Shipping insurance is like any other, a waste: until you need it. 5 Quote
fin Posted July 7, 2023 Author Posted July 7, 2023 In my case, it’s a Legalis XH I bought 4 years ago and have used almost daily since then. I definitely got my $52 out of it. Drive gear broke. I already replaced it with a Revros LT, but I hate to retire the Legalis. It seems like it’s still in pretty good shape, but I don’t know what caused the gear to break (besides a lot of angry bass). It could be wear on other parts that have caused the gear to break. Maybe the frame could be worn. It’s got a lot of miles on it. I wouldn’t be happy if I replaced the gear and then it or something else broke. If I could get parts for like $10, I would definitely try it, but I think I’m looking at more like $30, and I’d rather put that to another reel. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted July 7, 2023 Super User Posted July 7, 2023 @fin, that’s basically the case with my Sahara. I used it for steelhead for ages. Then bass for a bit. It went to the uk and caught some carp. It came back to the US for some bass and finally went to the beach. The second beach trip it got dunked in the shallow surf zone and was sand filled. I used it for the week and it killed it. I stripped it to pieces, cleaned everything, relubed, etc. it’s functional, but gritty and rough. I keep it if I want to go carp fishing but that’s about its limit. It was a $60 reel back in the day and has been well loved. If it was a $10 gear I might swap it. But I think it might be more and it’s not worth putting any more time or money into it. 1 Quote

Shipping I know there’s shipping. Just wanted to share in case it changed your mind to wanting to try it 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 8, 2023 Super User Posted July 8, 2023 DVC is gonna get a few of my reels for a cleaning. I had one done locally, and it’s smooth but kinda noisy. id rather try to fix if needed and keep, them nice as long as I can. I have a few reels I’ll donate when they act up. I got them free, and they aren’t great or even beloved by me. I just use them cuz I’m cheap. I don’t like a disposable culture. 1 Quote
