Drawdown Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Stuff like that makes me wonder if a the day is coming when a pro will successfully use FFS to find the stingy offshore fish he wants, and park it in front of them, changing colors and flakes until he hits what they want. As it is, the tried-and-true method seems to be to keep looking for “active fish.” Quote

It’s more about having that perfect bait ready when the fish wants it. 1 1 Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted July 13, 2023 Super User Posted July 13, 2023 One thing that cannot be measured and I believe unequivocally plays a huge role in catching is confidence. I have said this in the past where I worked a show with Gary Klein and we went out to lunch. I asked him about confidence in new baits and his reply was “I don’t know if having confidence in a bait catches fish but I do know that if you don’t have confidence in your bait you are guaranteed not to catch fish”. So, does flake matter? Maybe in some ways that aren’t measurable. ? 3 Quote

So, does flake matter? Maybe in some ways that aren’t measurable. ? Expand The only thing that gives me confidence in a bait is a history of catching fish. Confidence doesn’t explain why a certain color catches fish for someone. It can explain why they use that color more often, and why they catch more fish with that color than another, but confidence doesn’t explain why they caught fish with it in the first place. Lack of confidence in a bait hasn’t stopped me from using some baits I thought were ridiculous that ended up catching me fish, so I wouldn’t say you’re guaranteed to not catch fish with something you have no confidence in. I think what GK was getting at is that you have to to give something a fair chance. If you have no confidence and don’t throw it much, you probably won’t catch anything. I don’t think any of that really applies to the conversation about whether certain color/flake combos work better than others. I wish I could have expressed that in less words ? Quote
Captain Phil Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Roland Martin got it right when he said the secret to catching more bass was to go early and stay late. When you have fished as many tournaments as I have, you get used to hearing about "secret bait colors". The idea that a bass will hit a red flake worm over a green flake worm is in our heads. I have friends who swear they catch more bass on Red Shad worms. Tequila Sunrise was a trick color in years gone by. I've caught bass on some very strange colors. I once caught an 8 pound bass on a Merthiolate colored Zoom Trick worm in water so clear you could read a newspaper through it. What that bass thought my worm was is beyond me? I have driven 20 miles to buy some rare colored worms when I could have used what I had in my box already. I cleaned out my garage a few years back and threw out two huge boxes of plastic worms. All I use now is dark grape in stained water and watermelon green in clear. It's not the color of the flakes that makes the difference, it's the angler. 4 Quote
