Screw lock bait keeper question

So, I know this is probably a stupid question, but…

 

when I use a spinner bait/chatter bait/etc (anything with a trailer) that has a screw lock keeper, how do you attach the trailer? Do you hook it as normal and then just rotate around the lock? Reason I ask is because I have to “loop the bait and tick it in” while I’m trying to rotate around the screw lock. Makes sense, but wanted to know if that was the right way, or if there’s a better way?

In a word, Yes it screws on.

It's a little hard to describe but initially the trailer is threaded on as usual and still comes out the top of the bait. Judging that is a little different when the screw type trailer lock is involved but if you lay the trailer along side the bait you usually can come pretty close.  A straight rig is still important to enable the whole bait to run true and not caddywompus.  Once the trailer reaches the screw, simply spin it up onto the bait and stop once it reaches the end.  You'll probably need to spin the body and then flip the tail over the hook point 3 or 4 times to get it done.

Humm I’ve never seen a chatter bait or spinner bait with a screw lock on them.  Can you provide a link or pics?

I don’t specifically know if it was a chatter or spinner, I know some of my jigs are screw lock.

I'll add this though, Elaztech and screw locks don't form a very good relationship ?.

I dont know of any chatterbait with that style keeper but I do have some swim jigs that do. I always just fold the tail end of the plastic so that it clears the hook point while I thread it on. Kind of tricky with the thicker plastics like a paddletail.

Getting them on isn't bad. I use a lighter to apply some heat to the screw lock before threading it on. Goes in easy and stays put. Removing them is a bit of a chore at times.
