MJack Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Lately, I’ve been using a medium light spinning rod for topwater, throwing 1/8 and 1/4 oz poppers and ploppers. I have on 6lb mono. I’ve caught quite a few bass mostly smaller ones but a few nice ones too. I’ve also lost a few good ones. Anyone else use medium light spinning rods for topwater? Why or why not? What type of line? Any other advice? Quote
Bass Rutten Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 My [almost] dedicated topwater rod is a 6'9" medium-light, I throw jerkbaits on it as well, 30lb braid, very high hookup ratio. How and when are you losing them? Quote
MJack Posted July 4, 2023 Author Posted July 4, 2023 Both that I lost hit the lure when it was motionless, and I didn’t realize it at first, kind of sucked it in. It was pitch dark with one of them. Plus, one was a topwater lure with only #10 hooks. I’m not sure I got the best hook set on either. 3 minutes ago, Bass Rutten said: My [almost] dedicated topwater rod is a 6'9" medium-light, I throw jerkbaits on it as well, 30lb braid, very high hookup ratio. Yeezy Fishing Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 I use a 6’9” ML Shimano Zodias with 10 lb braid for small poppers. One thing I do is I use an easy sweeping motion when setting the hook. I learned the hard way that when I set it too fast and hard I end up pulling the trebles out. 1 Quote
Bass Rutten Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Sounds like you set before they sucked it in but I don't night fish so it's hard to say, but I generally don't set (a sweep really) until I feel the fish's weight. I use a daiwa seth feider topwater/jerkbait rod, it's a moderate/fast action. 1 Quote
SproDD79 Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 I switch between 2 ML spinning rods for topwater, I use a 6'1 Daiwa Blazon and a 6'8 Major Craft Benkei, both do double duty as jerkbait rods, but I prefer the Benkei for jerkbaits. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 All the time. Been using SCs 1/8-1/2 ML power rods for smaller poppers and spooks for years. I would recommend using braid with MLs. The stretch of mono and even some FC makes a ML feel underpowered at times. 1 Quote

GetFishorDieTryin Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 Premiers, Avids, Avid Inshore, Tidemaster, Mojo Bass and Legend Elite. A good number of my SCs are older and it seems like the newer blanks are a little softer, but they still work. With topwater you cant react to the bite until you feel the weight of the fish. 1 Quote
