What have y'all found to be the easiest/best way to sell your used rods? I have sold one rod before on eBay and it was a nightmare to ship. Only certain carriers would take it due to its size and the shipping cost was nearly as much as I sold the rod for. Do y'all sell them locally? Post on Facebook groups? Sell to online retailers (American Legacy, etc)? Any help would be appreciated. I've collected quite a few rods over the years now that I have no use for and would like to recoup some money and put it towards new gear that will get used

People sell here on flea market. I’ve personally only sold to a friend, or friend of a friend but I have bought rods from someone on this site and was perfectly happy. As far as your concerns about shipping probably just do Fb market or stipulate on your flea market post local only

Online is easiest for me

1. List them online…fb, here, or another site I’m not sure we can mention (***).

2. After selling buy prepaid label from pirateship.

3. Pack them well in heavy tubes.

4. Drop off at UPS, USPS or FedEx.

Never had an issue with any of the big delivery companies accepting large tubes using a prepaid label. If you walk in with your tube and ask them to ship it they’ll hammer you, use the prepaid labels. It’s been averaging about $25-$30 for shipping lately.

I’ve got 6 I culled out this morning. I’ll put them on CL. If I don’t get any takers I’ll have my wife put them on FB.

OfferUp

Most are local sales and you don't have to worry about shipping and shipping charges. Meet up at a safe place, say a police station with interested buyer.

I don't. Too much hassle.  That's why there's about 5 dozen of them in my garage.

I recently thought of selling a rod/reel combo this year and also found the shipping to be quite obnoxious for the cost of sale vs shipping and instead wound up selling them to a local shop that I’m fortunate enough to have relatively close by.

Shipping costs are a challenge.  I network with the bass club members and a handful of friends. I just sent a list of 15 rods I’m ready to let go of.

Trade in to ALF. Maybe don't get as much, but so easy/no hassle.

This is what I do and have sold 10 or so rods in the last year.  I get much more action from Facebook Marketplace than I do Craigslist, Ebay, or posting them on Forums.  Plus the shipping really eats away at your profit.  I set a good price, make pickup at my house so I don't have to drive anywhere, and because I live in a big market my rods sell.

And I've sold a lot of other stuff on Facebook Market place as well.  I inherited a bunch of random stuff from my dad and it was quite easy selling in on FB.  I did offer shipping on those items since they were smaller.  Every gun item I posted sold within a week.

Sell on any of the online forums and purchase a shipping label through pirate ship using whatever carrier is most economical, or has an office close to your house. I only buy labels via pirate ship these days, whether it be for fishing gear or otherwise. Not only are the prices good, but an insurance claim through pirate ship is much easier than going through USPS/FedEx/ups directly

ALF?

American Legacy Fishing - it's where I purchase most of my rods.

They also have an excellent used area - I've gotten two reels and a rod that were like new for well under their retail price.

I only make wise, educated and specific purchases to fill a niche I need. This is why I have a shed full of rods collecting dust - they all have a purpose and will eventually be used.

Or I will die and my kids will sell them in a yard sale...

Sigh...

I put on forums. When It sells I either use a rod tube I already have or ask the local tackle store for one, which they give me free. I package then go to usps and they ship It for $28.

Easy

Sell rods!  Watch your language this is a respectable forum.  Such sacrilegious posts should be avoided at all times.

Not sure what the hassle of shipping is. It’s very easy. Also I price the rod for what I want for It then say plus shipping. So no profit loss.

This only works if you’re selling a higher end rod that someone can’t get locally for the same price. No one is going to pay shipping on a $50 rod.

The postal rules collection is called the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM). It reads like the tax code. Results in employees not knowing all the rules.  A tube <8’ and 4” diameter ships $25-$35 priority mail. Pack snuggly with cushion at each end.

Same. They’ll offer like 40% of msrp for a great condition rod and then charge you $20 for shipping on top of it. I love ALF and buy from them more often than not but their trade in values are not competitive if you are willing to put effort into selling.

Prepaid labels are a must. The workers don’t have a clue. I’ve had several argue me up and down that they don’t ship them at all. Had one that wanted to charge me $120 to ship priority. I used to ship for $15 all day but now it’s $32 I believe.

I have not sold a rod, ever.

All my rods, save one, are Cabela's branded purchased between 1991 and 2001. One purchased around 2005 (my favorite spinning rod to date).

Ten total in my arsenal.

I like them very much, and have only broken a few tips.

I resist the urge to get new rods (and reels), knowing that if I fish with new technology, I will surely be breaking the bank to replace and upgrade everything.

I do surf eBay here and there, looking for old Cabela's rods.
