I generally use selective quotes, but sometimes quote the whole thing. I don't necessarily do it to notify the user, sometimes it's to make it clearer what I'm talking about.

100%, quoting often adds clarity and specificity. I'm sure there's those who do use it more like a tag, but quoting helps give everybody the same point of reference when multiple people are saying related but different things.

I hear you on tidying up the threads, but quoting is a very useful tool too.

Quoting can definitely get out of hand. It was really bad before they came up with the collapsed quote. If someone posted a lot of pictures, and then others quoted them, you'd get carpal tunnel from scrolling.

I'd be okay with getting rid of the quote button altogether, so that the only way to quote would be using the selective method.

I'm confucious. Below every user's post/reply there's a + button which reveals a dialog box indicating "Quote 1 post" and a Quote button which reveals the entire post/reply. I have no idea which one I should use and why, who gets notified by either, and I have no idea how to "tag" someone, why I would want to, and how to know if I've been tagged. For this reply, I used the green button. ?
