Super User ChrisD46 Posted June 27, 2023 Super User Posted June 27, 2023 My thoughts are for a sunny day a chrome color top water can be a good color to use IF your body of water has shad as a bait fish for bass in it . Conversely , if your body of water does not have shad and is primarily a blue gill / crawfish bait habitat for bass - then chrome may not be a good color for top water compared to say bluegill , bone or baby bass top water colors ... Your thoughts and experiences on using chrome color top water lures on lakes with no shad ? 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 My experience is that chrome is the best all around color for top water lures. Here in Florida, top water fishing works best in clear water. You can throw a top water lure all day in dingy turbid water and all you will get is a sore arm. If the water is clear enough, top water is a great option. Top water lures mimic frogs, insects, wounded bait fish and the like. It's the splash and action that draw the most aggressive strikes. The less of the lure that is visible the better. Chrome reflects everything around it, making it the most invisible color. Bass don't know what it is, they only know they want it. I have two top water lures that have won me more money than all the rest put together. One is a chrome Devil's Horse and the other is a chrome Tiny Torpedo. I wouldn't trade those two lures for a truck load of Whopper Ploppers. In dingy water or on dark days, green and black is my color of choice. As far as Shad are concerned, they are just another bass food on the menu. 7 Quote

Hooked my biggest topwater fish on that lure. Unfortunately lost that fish when it buried me in grass. I had more success on the devils horse fishing it fast, too 2 Quote

Most strikes are explosive. There is something about this lure than makes big bass want to kill it. It's more than a food thing, it's a big dog in the yard thing. ? 2 Quote

river-rat Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 A chrome/blue back/orange belly Rogue and Devils Horse has been very effective for me for a long time. 1 Quote

Super User Spankey Posted June 27, 2023 Super User Posted June 27, 2023 On the river I don’t think chrome is a deterrent. Bluegill, Shad and frog patterns work as does black, Whites and yellow. Do they (smallies and greenies) see the plug in color and an exact pattern? I know that I don’t know. But suspect they are reacting to a sound and silhouette shape of some type. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 27, 2023 Super User Posted June 27, 2023 There are certain colors that for whatever reason just work. Chrome Black Back is one of those colors. Not just with topwater lures but crankbaits, & lipless. When Bill Lewis first started selling Rat-L-Traps your color choices were chrome black back, chrome blue back, & Smoky Joe. We threw them under all conditions. 2 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted June 27, 2023 Super User Posted June 27, 2023 I throw the cotton Cordell boy howdy, chrome with a black back. And yes, the water I fish is gin clear. I also do well with whopper poppers and buzzbaits for top water. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 I believe the reason I get such explosive strikes on chrome topwaters, is that they mirror what is around them and the fish can't see a good target. They, in turn, will suck in as much water as they possibly can to get whatever it is into their mouth. I've never had a bass just slurp a chrome one like they do sometimes with colored ones. 3 Quote
