And my group won't fish with anyone who will keep and eat a bass that could have been released healthily. We all have our principles.

Understood.  What is the principle if you don't mind me asking.

My daughter caught a 5lber when she was about 14. First thing literally out of her mouth was “can we keep It!”
That fish was delicious.

Your principle seems to be that a person can eat what they catch. I agree, they can. But I and my group do not like keeping and eating bass because we view it as a sport fish in a world in which anyone can go to the store for fish, and the idea of "feeding my family" while using expensive bass fishing gear and lures is not to be taken seriously. A lot of people have a right and are free to do many things, but others don't have to participate or be in a position that enables what we disagree with, in this case fishing with someone who is going to bucket bass.

You should do some research on YouTube real quick. Very easy and good skill to have.

Most of the waters around me have warnings to limit consumption of the fish. Some or just a couple a week or month, more are only one unless your a child or pregnant then it's 0, or just 0 - the sign just says "dont et the fish hear iddiot"

But if I hit Maine waters, maybe this might come in handy. I'll do some youtubin just to have in the tackle bag

Do it the easy way.

I agree. One of those skills that is good to have even if you don’t plan on using it.

Thank you for your reply sir.

Great fish, congrats on the new PB.

I think you did the right thing on eating it, I do the same with fish that don't make it even do all fish tastes gross.

I guess I would develop a taste for fish if I could catch and eat 9lbs every week.

Sounds like you did the right thing to me. Growing up we ate almost everything we caught. Over the years I've eaten trout, bass, pickerel, sun fish, crappie, hornpout, salmon, eel, perch, skate, cod, haddock, mackerel, cusk, and a few more I've probably forgot.

That stinks. But when our hobby is dragging bass out of their habitat by a hook in the mouth there's going to be some carnage.

Well that's not how we like our big bass stories to end, but not wasting her was the right decision.

I had not eaten bass since I was too young to remember (my Grandpa was not the catch release type. lol).  Then I went bass fishing with a buddy a couple years ago, and he fishes for food.  We caught and released plenty and he kept his 6.  I told him I couldn't be bothered to clean any - not a complete lie, as at that time I didn't really know if bass... especially warm water summer bass... were good to eat.  Well, he showed up at my door the next day with a bag of fillets - a mix of LMB and SMB from our trip the evening prior.  They were delicious and we could not tell them apart.  I'm still a catch and release guy, because I really can't be bothered cleaning them, but if we gut hook one and I know it won't make it, that's the death bell for the next couple of 2-pounders so we have enough for a family meal of fish tacos.?

Hornpout is a nickname for bullheads

Skate is a relative of the Ray (like Manta Rays)

Cusk is a relative of the Cod

how would you guess she died?  was it a bloody hookup?  too long taking pics?

trying to learn here.

I don’t know for sure. No blood, she was barely skin hooked in the roof of the mouth. Took 2 pictures then held her in the water. I thought maybe it was the length of the fight.

Thanks for that.  Bummer for sure.  But literally made lemonade from lemons.  :)

You did the right thing by eating your catch and honoring the fishes life. I love eating fish. I just prefer the saltwater variety.

I wish I was talking about peanut butter. I caught a nine pound largemouth Saturday. It was epic. Took some pictures and put her on the scale then turned her loose. She swam away all sassy , then 5 minutes later she floated to the top on her side. Bummer. I tried three times to release her, and every time it went the same way.  I’ve had fish die before but this one bothers me a little bit. She was delicious though. Has this happened to anyone else on the internet ?

waste not want not, as they say. Good on you for eating the old girl, a lot of people just leave them for the birds.
