This happened to me back in 2006.  At the time it was a new PB largemouth.  I caught it in August when it was very warm out, and deep hooked it with a plastic.  I tried reviving it for 15 minutes and it would just turn belly up.

I got a skin mount of it, and its still on my wall.  The fins are wrinkling, and the color is fading now.  Skin mounts deteriorate over time.

Normally bigger fish have more chemicals and contaminants built up their bodies.  Its referred to as bio-accumulation.  Eating smaller fish is healthier.  In this case, you really didn't have much of a choice.  My question is, why didn't you post a photo of this new PB?  I have to wonder if you completely made the story up for some attention instead about eating it.

Congrats on the nice catch! Bummer she could not be released, but it happens. Reminder, with the extreme heat of the summer, it is important to get them back in the water quickly. Heat does its number on all of us. You did the right thing and had a good meal.

A 9 lb. bass lived longer than most.  I don't much worry about killing fish.  They're not smart animals that can really comprehend death.  And at 9 lbs., it did what it needed to do, which was pass on its superior genes.  Everything has its time.   Most bass won't make it to 9 lbs.  Most will get eaten long before they hit 1 lb.  Often by other bass.  I'm more concerned with the preservation of the species as a whole, which even then, I'm typically not too worried about bass as there are probably more bass in American waters now than there has been at any point in the past.  They're often an "invasive species" that we look the other way on because we want them there.

The pollution from your lawn, sewer, garbage, automobiles and boat have killed a lot more fish.  Not to mention the fish you've eaten at restaurants and all of the products you've bought that have sacrificed fish, either directly or indirectly.  So sometimes it's good to be reminded of the impact we can have on nature by being forced to recon with it firsthand, so we can remember the much greater impact we have that we don't see the direct results of.  Obviously we're not going to live a pollution free lifestyle and save all of nature, but every little bit helps.

So if you feel bad enough about killing that fish, then do something about it to make it up to its family.  Maybe next time you go to throw away some old paint, save it so you can take it to a recyling center instead once you've collected enough.  Or choose not to fertilize your lawn just because it's time and wait until it actually needs it.  Or whatever you want to do.  Any act, not matter how small, is better than no action at all.

I have been known to pull on a femur every once in a while, but this one is true. I don’t think I’ve ever posted a pic ?

I would have done same thing. I weeded out anyone in my inner circle who would have criticized me for keeping and eating a bass long ago.

I havent eaten bass, but i gut hooked a largemouth and a smallmouth awhile ago and my parents ate them and said they were good. Is there a difference in the taste between the two? (since one prefers cold rock bottom and the other swamp mud)

If I had to choose, I'd take a smallmouth from colder, cleaner water every time than a largie from murky, warm water.  I've had smallmouth from Canada and although it had a lot of bones, it wasn't terrible.

Course if you roll it in batter or breading, deep fry it in oil, and then dip it in tartar sauce, who cares.  You've completely covered the actual taste of the fish at that point anyways.

Nice fish, unfortunate it didn't make it.

I had a large fish die on me pond fishing once. She ate a small crankbait deep into her gills, was bleeding badly, and the water and air were both very hot. She had no chance as soon as she ate the bait basically. I'm not a fish eater, but I always wanted a bass mount. She's still hanging on the wall in my shop. Doesn't look nearly as big to me now as she did to me as a teen. I wish I'd hung the little 4F Fat A in her mouth but it's long gone. Felt better doing that with her than leaving for turtle food.

I didn’t get the measurements on her, just a weight and some pictures.

I ate military chow hall food 3 times a day. One day during evening chow i found maggots crawling in my sloppy joe. I cant eat bass no more as i consider them friends of the water world. I now only eat walleye, they are not my friends.

At least you didn't let her go to waste, personally I would've had her mounted.

It never crossed my mind to get her mounted , but now I’m kicking myself for not getting the necessary measurements.

And my group won't fish with anyone who will keep and eat a bass that could have been released healthily. We all have our principles.
