Unlike some people, I'm not one to buy cars very often and when I buy a car I like to buy them new. My last two cars were a 2001 Volvo S60 and then a 2013 Genesis Coupe (which I actually bought in the spring of 2012). But I've been itching for something new for about a year now, and today I finally pulled the trigger on a new Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend. I splurged a bit with the tow package, convenience package, and the Ford 360 Assist+. It also has the moonroof even though I didn't want it. But I couldn't find one in the color I wanted (Cactus Gray) with only the other three options.

 

One of the best parts is now I will be able to transport my kayak and I won't be locked to launching at my hotel. I think I'll try car topping it first instead of buying a trailer because I'm thinking of buying a used boat in the spring.

 

The dealer where I bought it was 90 minutes from home, so I got to put some time in it today. So far, so good. Part of me misses the power and handling of my Genesis, but it is a bit quieter and has a lot more bells and whistles. I'm sure I made the right choice.

My folks got pretty much the exact same one a couple months ago. They’re a nice looking rig, and my folks have been happy with it so far.

Do those rails on the sides pop out and go horizontal? My moms car does and they magically turn into a great kayak rack

I don't know. I'll have to look at that tomorrow.

 

Right now, one thing that I'm looking at The Yakima Timberline cross rails, the Yakima Big Catch rack, and the Yakima Showboat 66 loading rack. All combined, that's another $1,100. 

 

I'm also looking at a Right On trailer with some padding sleeves for just under $900. That's probably going to be the better option since it will be easier to load and unload. And since I have a C-Tug cart I can even load and unload in the parking lot instead of tying up the boat ramp.

NICE truck!

 

And use your cart if it's easier, but don't sweat this.  It's your lake too and you're getting on the water.  I never have an issue when a kayaker needs to park at the ramp.  Some lakes just don't give you a choice.  You're a boater.  You just have more energy than us.

Nice Bronco!  I just bought a new Maverick.  

 

I think the trailer is a great idea.

 

I outfitted my old Subaru Forester with a combination of Thule and Yakima components to make it able to carry two canoes or two kayaks.  I had the extendable loading bar, etc.  The whole set-up was fairly expensive.

 

After two shoulder surgeries on my right side and problems with the left side, loading boats onto the roof rack hurts me enough that I don't tend to do it very often.  I wish I had spent the money on a trailer.  Something to think about if you're past your forties...  ?

Nice ride Koz! My step-daughter has a Bronco and absolutely loves it. Have you thought about buying a used jet ski or small boat trailer? You can find them fairly cheap if you look around. Easily modified into a yak trailer. 

 

I just finished modifying a used small jon boat trailer for my neighbor. He paid $50.00 for the trailer, maybe another $300.00 for stuff (tires, bearings, bunks, winch, trailer jack, lights, paint, etc). I didn't charge for my labor, he's my neighbor. Now he's got one sweet canoe trailer.

I'm thinking about the Right On Multi-Sport trailer (about $900 for the trailer and the crossbar padding) or the Malone EcoLight 1-Boat Kayak Trailer Package (about $1400). 

 

Since I have a heavy kayak, I like the rail bunks on the Malone. But I could also craft some out of PVC for the Right On.

 

I'm still debating.

What engine? The 2.7 Ecoboost is the one with issues.

The Bronco Sport is the little guy with either a 1.5 or 2.0. Not the same as a Bronco. The 2.0 is a proven engine.

So I've had this bad boy for just over a month and the other day we had a hail storm with 2" hail and now I've got 8 or 9 dents and dings in it. I filed a claim and the body shop is checking it out next week.

 

I did pick up the Malone trailer and that has worked out great, although I still haven't had much time to fish and when I do it's too dang hot.

 

I'm not sure how much time I'll have to fish in the next month or so because I need to find a new place to live. I was renting a cottage out here and while it was not spectacular, it was dirt cheap. But the owners just sold their house and the cottage and I need to move by the middle of next month.

 

Other rental homes are expensive here so it's actually cheaper to buy. So today I scrambled and git approved for a mortgage. Now I just need to find a house and unfortunately inventory of homes is slim right now, especially in my price range.

 

At least if I can't find anything I can put my stuff in storage and live in my hotel for a little while. But it's absolutely no fun living at work.
