I'm doing some research for an upcoming fishing kayak purchase and would appreciate everyone's opinion on an appropriate fish finder for such a setup. I think I've settled on a 9" screen. Wish list includes a finder that is capable of side imaging, down imaging, Auto Charting, and compatibility with a trolling motor so I can fish along contour lines. A bonus would be compatibility with forward live imaging (though I don't plan to purchase that at this time)

I think I've got it down to:

Garmin EchoMAP UHD2 93sv ($1,200)

Humminbird Helix 9 G4N ($1,600)

Lowrance Elite FS 9 ($1,000)

All of these are considered "new" on Tackle Warehouse's website and thus there are no customer reviews, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these or older models, especially fishing out of a kayak. Thanks.

I have two Garmin 93SV UHD. I’ve been extremely happy with them! They’re very user friendly, good maps, and Quick Draw is great for the little lakes I fish that have no bottom contours.

I’m not aware of any other than Humminbird that has follow the contour.  If you go that route be sure to get the proper trolling motor.  I believe you may need Ipilot link with blue tooth.

I personally run 4 Birds. And as @Jig Man if you want contour following Humminbird is the one you want. If it doesn’t matter either Bird or Garmin.

That’s good to know. I was looking at the Old Town Autopilot, so the Min Kota trolling motor should pair with it.

I have the helix 9 on my autopilot. I have mega live on it. I upgraded from a helix 7 g3gps msi. Great unit. Amazing imaging clarity. The only way to follow contours is if you install a bow mount motor on the kayak. If that’s your plan, then just get a paddle version of the kayak and add the motor. Do some research on motor mounts for kayaks already on the market. One objective is the main one. See what mounts are already available and base the boat on that.
