Today my new Shimano Curado 150MGL was delivered, so I took it to Cabela's to get some line and since I was there I decided to get it spooled up. I just recently moved and my tools for spooling line are in a box somewhere, so I figured it would be easier to just get it spooled while I was there.

The man doing the spooling is a little older, and having a bit of trouble getting the line tied onto the reel correctly, so he asks his coworker for a hand who then walks off to help somebody else without so much as a response to the man who was helping me. Then the man who is helping me seems to get it figured out correctly, eventually, but as soon as he steps on the lever to start the spooling machine my reel flies off and gets a small gash on the surface of the reel. I saw it happen, but wasn't able to get a good look at the reel until he was finished spooling it. All said and done, the reel has line on it and the scratch is just cosmetic, but I'm still annoyed that my brand new reel now has a scratch in it because the guy at Cabela's wasn't able to attach it to the machine correctly.

Am I wrong in being annoyed?

Nope - perfectly reasonable actually...if that happened to a new reel of mine, I'd take it up with the manager.

Course I spool my own reels, so there is that.

Hard to get mad at an old timer, but I'd wanna go on a rampage until I said my happy word, Goosfraba.

Call customer service and make some noise without sounding like a kook, and if you can, avoid directly implicating the old guy. They might just make you happy in the end.

Probably too late to do anything about It now.

I wouldn’t have left the store until it was resolved to my satisfaction. As others have. Stated, I spool my own. I would have said something as soon as I noticed the guy was having problems. I would have just taken it back home. I think it’s too late to do anything now. Unless the guy admits he dinged your reel, it’s his word against yours.

Definitely should have complained & got some compensation.

The year is 2025, Bass Pro Shops/Cabelas is now closing all stores in America due to bankruptcy because of having to replace millions of reels damaged from line spooling problems. How did this happen you might be asking? A 2023 Bass Forum gained popularity about how to get them to give you a new reel or a gift card if the reel gets damaged. So millions of Americans lined up waiting outside like a heard of cattle to get their reels spooled with line to maybe, just maybe get a new reel.

You should definitely call customer service and explain what happened. This is unacceptable. Is it going to get scratched in use? Probably. BUT that is for you to do!

You have a right to be annoyed and I would have been too. It sounds like you and I would have handled it the same though. Just let it go. I certainly wouldn’t want to hurt the man’s feelings.

I had a Curado K I dropped on concrete. It didn’t ding it up bad at all but left a few small scratches on the top of the reel. I took meguires plast x to it and lightly rubbed with a microfiber cloth, could hardly tell anything ever happened! I’d give that a try.

I try hard to keep my things nice, but at the end of the day it’s just “stuff”. I’d use the reel and enjoy it. Go catch a 5 lber and you will forget all about it.

file it under "what was I thinking"

Thirty-somethings and even 60-somethings at tackle shops (bike shops, etc.) are negotiators, trying to sell you something from "I know something you don't know" - but the opposite is usually true - you know your gear and your needs better than they do.

If the guy had trouble tying the line to the spool, which yes, they can be a pain, but to loose your spool? Nah.

I did it myself, for the first time recently, so why have someone else do it ? There's no special way to spool it other than start with mono first if using braid. Don't know if it's necessary but I'm sure someone here will say why. So the braid won't slip, I'm gathering, due to the wax coating on the braid, which is odd considering I don't think one would use most of the line to get that close to the end before replacing the line form age. Maybe so depending on how much you fish.

Depending on the store manager, had you politely brought it to his/her attention you most likely would have been given a $25.00 G/C and an apology.
