I would rather not...but after having skin cancer dug out of my head, it's probably time for a buff / neck gaiter.

What's your recommendation for good coverage and keep you cool?

I'm not a small man...size 8 hat...

Simm’s sun protection SPF 50 Gaiter and gloves are light weight and comfortable. Still need a good hat! SunDay Afternoon is a lightweight SPF hat.

I personally don't wear gloves but I try to wear a SAfishing face shield, I have a few in different colors and they do me just fine, I always keep SPF 50 dunscreen lotion on my hands and neck, I try not to wear short sleeve shorts or shirts and prefer UV and jeans/cargo pants, even in the heat which sounds crazy. In the sun I usually ditch the baseball caps and try to wear straw hats or boonies.

Columbias are my coolest and most comfortable buffs.

I wear Huk face shields and gloves. Very happy with them. Lightweight and breathable and keeps you cool.

I tried the Kastking stuff from Amazon. It runs very small, the one size fits all hat won't fit my head so I don't recommend that. I think the gloves/gaiter are fine but don't have anything to compare to.

Have you thought about trying the long sleeve sun shirts with the hood built in? I prefer those over neck gaiters

I have both. But sometimes the hoodie still doesn't cover your face.

Gotcha. I have a thick beard and wear a hat. Every once and awhile I get a little red on my nose. That’s about it.

And it occurs to me I could wear the hoodie with a wide brim hat over it .

I have a  Short thick neck and do not prefer the tight feeling around it. They also tend to bunch up more causing them to feel hotter. A breeze down the hood always feels nice.

I found Shelta hats that actually fit my size 8 head. Great blocking of the sun...but still getting glare off water.

I would rather not wear sunscreen...will try a neck gaiter / buff.

 Daubs,

I use a Tilley hat religiously and a good buff.  The Tilley hat has a strap in the back as well as under the chin.  What I really like about the Tilley hat is it's dunk-ability and that back of head strap that prevents it from falling off in high winds. I'll sometimes dunk it in ice chest water. When I am summer time Bass fishing here in Texas (100°+days). Stretchy Under Armour type long sleeved tee with one of the collared long sleeve shirts over that and quick dry fishing pants. is the ticket.

I've had a 3/4" x 1/2" chunk of Basal Cell Carcinoma cut out of my face and every six months is a Dermatologist appointment. She give me the strip to skivvies speech and reaches for her nitrogen gun when I come in the office door. I've had two smaller chunks removed from my chest.  I don't like to use sun screen so covering up and then using a sun BLOCK (spf 70 or higher) on my nose and cheeks under the sun glasses before I go out on the water.  I really wish I would have done better covering up when I was younger. The damage is cumulative.  Protection, protection protection!

FM

p.s. it is also cooler being covered up then having skin exposed. Desert dwelling natives had it right long before sun screen was invented.  Here in Texas and fair skinned you can be fried in a hour or less.

p.p.s.s.- That Shelta hat looks pretty sweet. Do they have a light colored one

I tried one of those this summer and love it, in addition to sun protection it is very comfortable in the heat.  Mine has thumb loops so it also covers half the hands.

I had a dime sized Carcinoma cut out of my head two years ago...and get the strip to skivvies, head to toe check every 6 months as well.

I grew up right next to a public pool...we spend every waking moment there...never any sunscreen...burned to a crisp the firs week of summer...wore a white t-shirt for a few days...then we were good to go. Crazy times back in the day (I'm 56 this year).

Check out Shelta hats, they have many styles and colors. The XXXL is one of the only hats I've found to fit my giant dome. Good coverage, the brim doesn't move, and they actually float.

I am in the exact situation, I need to wear a hat all the time and put on sun block. Also was told not to wear a mesh hat. I have a few of the KK gaiters also their shirts with built in gaiter and hood. Skin cancer is not a joke.

Same here - already had a patch surgically removed and others frozen, so I hide from the sun as much as I can.  Long sleeve sun shirts, a brimmed hat with solid top (not mesh) and a sunshield.  I tried SA stuff and they're way too hot, but I've got a Columbia one and a Huk shield that are both good.

Neck gaiters are too tight and too warm. I like the hooded fishing shirts these days. It seems just about everyone makes them, but I really like the shirts from Simms. They make a few different styles. They are super light, and loose fitting which helps keep you cool . The hood fits loosely over a ball cap and gives you coverage on your neck, ears, and most of your face.

I despise sunscreen.   My mom and my wife have both had skin cancer surgeries.  I spent my whole life in the sun.  Much of it shirtless and hatless.
I have been lucky so far, but still get checked annually.  The whole check if you know what I mean.  Shocked me the first time.  I was like, “ I am not a nudist”, I think I am good down there.   It SHE is thorough!  ?.

If I am out from 10 am - 3 pm, I am in sun pants, sun shirt with hood, hat (no protection up there ?), and fingerless gloves.  Many of my sunshirts have built in buffs, so if I feel it on my face, I will pull them up for a while.   I will put a little sunscreen on my nose and cheeks at rare times.

I actually feel cooler wearing all that than with shorts and t shirt.

I’ve always been resistant to the sun but I have been slowly losing that quality as I age.  My dermatologist told me as long as I’m not burning, I’m pretty good but still recommended sunscreen or spf rated clothing so I went from shorts, short sleeved vented fishing shirts and visors to long sun pants, long sleeved spf 50 shirts some with and some without hoods, sun buffs and full hats.  I got a very nice HUK buff at Roland Martens Resort on Okeechobee that has longer tabs front and back to fit down inside your shirt and a different fabric down the center of the front to allow easier breathing.  I still can’t do the gloves though.

I've bought from SA in the past.  They don't have the selection they use to.  Anyhow, they are cheap and easily modified.  For protecting my neck I'll trim them down, otherwise it's just too much material bunched up and hot.  I'll also make a 6" slit at the bottom along both seams.  Tuck that in my shirt to make sure the top of my back and top of my chest stay covered.  I use these all the time when I mow in addition to fishing.  :occasion14:

One advantage Simms and a few others have is vent holes at the nose.  They help.  I'm not a fan of Simms gloves, fingers too long.  Huks that I have now are nice.
