Spooling Braid - Spinning Reel

Half the YouTubes show making sure the line comes off the spool in the same direction as the reel rotation.  The other ones show putting braid on spinning reels just like a baitcasting reel...straight off the spinning spool.  So what do you all do? I'm getting horrible loop and line knots on my spinning reels with braid.  WHAT?!

Whether it's braid, mono, FC or hybrid - this is what I always do when spooling up my spinning reels. Even my backing - which I should never reach - is put on this way.

I’m betting that your problem is how you cast and close the bail not how you spool the line.

Throw the spool on the boat floor or in a box and go. Doesn’t seem to matter how you load braid.

It DOES matter with the nylon, copolys or fluoros - spool in same direction as reel rotation.

 

You might have a bad roller bearing. Some reel brands/types don’t seem to handle braid as well, also.

It’s fine to spool spinning reels straight off the filler spool but the line must come off the BOTTOM.

I do it the same as the reel rotation.  I've never done it any other way so I don't know if it makes a difference or not.

Or it could be a 'budget' reel that has a bushing.

 

Only under $70 spinning reels I know of that had a bearing were the Avocet RZT's - reason I got a few of them on deep discount when Mitchell stopped making them.

I spool braid the same way as I spool mono, fluoro, and hybrid lines.  I try to spool the line onto the reel the same way it comes off the manufacturer's spool.  That being said, I don't think it actually matters for braid like it does for all of the other fishing lines.  It's more just force of habit and peace of mind.

I bring my reels into Cabela's to get spooled.  They use an electric line winder and can do it in 3 minutes with zero line twist.  Plus they do not charge to do it and they do not charge for mono backing either.

For braid put the spool of line in an empty bucket or empty box so the filler spool can’t move around. For mono and fluoro either have the line come off the bottom of the filler spool or lay the spool flat on the floor and make sure the line comes off the filler spool counter clockwise. Make sure you pinch the line as tight as possible between fingers when spooling. More often than not wind knots are user error or due to bad line lay. Make sure you close bail by hand and make sure you line is laying even on the spool
