What is the general consensus on this reel from people who own them? I can get a pretty darned good deal on a Gen 4 (all black) right now but wondered if they are a good reel or junk, I try not to waste money when I can help it :).

I like mine. I also got a shallow BFS spool for it. I did have to get a 2nd one though. 1st one started to get geary feeling. The 2nd one so far is smoother.

Not to derail (PM me if you want) but which BFS spool did you put on it?  I have a spare Revo SX which should be the same spool that I wouldn't mind converting.

Brett's daddy- it looks like Bass pro has them for $60. At that price I'd say you can't go wrong.  I have quite a few Abu reels in the previous generation (not the current ones) and at full retail they aren't worth it but you can always get them on a good sale when they become worth it.  For instance, the STX Gen 4 retails at $199 and its not worth that (there are better options) but when they were on sale for $120-$150 they are much better value.

I bought the shallow BFS spool from ebay, but I think aliexpress also sells them do a search for abu garcia black max or revo 4 X.

search AMO Store Ali Express to find Revo aftermarket BFS spools.

Make sure you look at the specs and drawings to match spool diameter and spindle length.

Arent the gen 4 revos the ones that 70% of the users had the side plates falling off and dumping the spools in the water, and Abu recommended to put tape over the side?

I belive max 3 and revo 4 x share spool sizes so any of the shallow max 3 spools out there will fit revo 4 x.  Amo is the highest quality of the max 3 spools but there are some super cheap questionable ones out there too if that's your thing.

I like my 5 speed as well and as far as the side plate falling off I’ve never experienced that.

Revos are quality reels. You can typically get Lews or other Doyo variants at better prices or as suggested, wait for sales.

The Lews Speedspool LFS is on sale to for $75 which is about $15-$20 more than the Revo X…worth it?

I could be wrong but I don’t think the Revo has an aluminum frame, but the Lew’s does so I would go with the Lew’s. ?

Edit: Confused the Revo on sale with the Revo5 X that has a carbon frame

@Ryanralston07 The gen 4 Revo X does have an aluminum frame.

Ended up going with the Revo X for $54. That's pretty hard to beat for that price considering it was $119 originally.

I think you'll be really happy at that price.

Would this be the one for a Revo SX gen 4?  I know mine has the short spindle and it says Revo4X in the description, but I can't quite tell.

No but they have a spool that will work.  You want this one.  You'll want one with the induction plate that sticks out vs the flat kind.  This is because the SX is dual brake and the magnets are designed to work with a induction plate that is mounted to the centrifugal brake.  In its absence the induction plate needs to be in the same location on the amo spool.  If it were a flat sided spool it would be too far away for the SX.  Push the store home button to go to the amo store and you can drill down to find the spool from there.

Thanks. I went through their store and didn’t see that one before. It clearly says revo sx4. I guess I was looking at drilled out spools.

I’m not familiar with the exact features of those two off the top of my head. Look them both up and compare and see what’s of value to you personally. Any questions on what you see post back here
