I was perusing their website. and came across this jig called Shot caller. How does this differ from a regular swim jig? Is it just the head shape? Generally speaking, what’s the most prolific color for swim jigs? I’ve been using 1/4 oz black/blue with a trailer which has been successful for me. What’s your go to color scheme? Thank you in advance.

I've got both the shot caller and the regular swim jig from Mike (plus the mini swim jig).  The shot caller and regular swim jig are basically the same jig, aside from the head design.  They are a normal weight hook/brushguard.  The eye on the shot caller is enclosed a lot more.  They fish basically the same for me.  Both come through woodier brush, things like willows, pads like any other swim jig.  I have a lot of thick grass (milfoil and pondweed) and I find that the regular swim jig comes through them a little better.  A like a pointier nose compared to the shot caller for thicker grass.

The mini swim jig has the pointy nose I prefer for grass and is very similar to the strike king tour grade swim jig. I use them interchangeably.  Both are lighter wire/weedguard style swim jig, so I don't throw them into heavier wood as much (not that we have much of that here).

For colors, the world is your oyster.  Our water is very clear up here and bluegill are the primary forage in a lot of places so I gravitate towards green pumpkin variations.  If the water is stained I'll go to black and blue or white.  I normally have a 3.8 SIF keitech on the back but will go to a 4.3 later in the season when the bluegills are bigger.  I also fish a rage menace vertically for a short but tall option.  Most any trailer that gives a bit of kick will work.  The keitech has a nice body roll at slow speeds and on the fall.  Rage plastics are more durable for me.

The Shot Caller has a skinnier flatter head on the sides.  Some of the other features are a recessed eye for the hook and a bigger eye then the Swim jig.  The hook is the same, except the 1/2 Swim has a 5/0 and the Shot Caller 1/2 is a 4/0 hook.

Some of my best selling colors,  no particular order.

Black Blue

Bluegill

Super White

Sexy Shad

Flash Gill (special make up category)

Bream

Bull Gill

Oops, one more. When do you use those rattles? Is it seasonal or personal?  ;)

Love the Shot Caller! Black/Blue in 1/4 oz or 3/8 oz (depending on the depth I'm fishing) in stained/dirty water is my go-to. Clear water I like Bluegill or Bream. Can't go wrong with either. And definitely pay the little extra for wire tie collar.

Sometimes I'll get crazy and throw something like this in the spring or where I know there's crawfish.

I don't usually use rattles on swim jigs. The trailer you use will usually give off enough vibration when fishing dirty water. IMO at least...

Here's a side by side of the swim jig and Shot Caller. Shot Caller is on the right. As Mike said, it's head is flatter/skinnier with a recessed line tie. To me it comes thru grass better than the swim jig.

Great comparison shot. The shot caller also tends to stand up a little bit more at rest and I've caught some hogs stopping and going on the bottom with my swim jig when a normal jig on the bottom or t-rig isn't getting bit ????

Mike, just got the prompt delivery of swim jigs, and they are already producing! Thank you.

When do you pros use rattles in jigs?

Just getting into jig fishing, and I'm still lost in the jig world since there are so many varieties out there. I'm curious as to if there's an "all-purpose jig" that can: 1) swim 2) work off the bottom like a football(?) jig. Does Siebert have one of those? What would be the most popular color/weight? I've some football jigs that's collecting dust in my tackle box as we speak. Am I "allowed" to swim them too or are they not made for that purpose? Thank you, Mr Jig Experts!

You can do anything with anything, but you can't go wrong with the shot caller for a do anything jig!

The dock rocker/brush/G2 and shot caller could all be great do anything jigs IMHO but the dock rocker is probably the most capable of 'doing it all' without being a master of any one thing except maybe skipping!

I find that as a jig fisherman, I lean into the strengths of each jig in context and have great success doing so.

Might be worth getting a small handful of each type for different scenarios!

I'd just get black and blue and a bluegill/green pumpkin variant in probably the 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 oz sizes for each type and just learn where and when to throw them.

The shot caller is a great all purpose jig for swimming and bringing through wood or grass. There are better for both but to have one jig it’s not a bad choice. Swapping trailers will help depending what you’re doing. I don’t love the shot caller down into bigger chunk rock but it doesn’t stop me from throwing it there when the situation presents itself. An arkie head is the other all purpose.  Mike makes an arkie jig.  It’s very similar to the dock rocker. Both are going to fish very similarly.

for me, I stock up on swim jigs and dredge jigs. The dredge head is an all purpose (but not swimming grass) for what I fish and the swim jig does the heavy grass.

as a pitching or swimming jig, a 3/8 oz is a good all around starting point. Vary your trailer and you can fish 0-10’ pretty well. If you’re in the <3’ range a lot then maybe drop to 5/16 or 1/4. If you’re always in 8’+ the a 1/2 is a good one to have. If you’re fishing shallow and around thick grass then go a little heavier.

colors are personal preference, but if you just had black and blue and some version of green pumpkin you’d be just fine the world over. For me, when I order I pick the next color in mikes color pallet that looks good to me. Some variation of GP, someone variation of black/blue, and the occasional brown variant. In a swim jig you can throw in a white variant either with chartreuse, silver, or something else if you have shad and stained or dirty water.

I must have missed it somehow as I have no recollection of seeing that on their website. You can swim it, too? What kind/color of trailer do you use? Thank you in advance!

This is a better image to show the detail of the colors and head.  This style is very effective in bushes and buck brush.
