spinnerbait reel?

I throw large spinnerbaits on 7'1" MH/F rod with a simple Lews Speed Spool 6.3:1 and 15lb YoZuri line. I've always been pleased with the results.

20 or 25% difference in speed is significant, especially when the speed is already so slow

Just trying to argue for the sake of it?  The cynical ending doesn't make your point better.

 

The point was whatever your max rpm of spinning the handle is limits your overall retrieve speed.  There is no magic you can apply to spin it faster.  The minimum however is up to the angler.

I don't think I've ever heard so much debate over a spinnerbait reel!  I have several combos that can throw them, so I just pick one that has a ratio that is comfortable for me to retrieve at the speed I want (or the fish, actually want). It ain't that complicated.

Sure I’ll debate with you too, lol. I think if someone is looking for one spinnerbait reel for largemouth, and they choose anything other than a 5 speed, they are doing themself a disservice. That gear ratio, speaking in the most general terms, gives you the best ability to slow way way down, and to operate comfortably in the slow to moderate-slow retrieve speeds that allow most, but not all, of spinnerbaits on the market today to operate at their ideal cadence, what Captain Phil talks about. 
 

Jason Christie is considered by quite a few folks to be the best spinnerbait angler as far as touring pros go, and he prefers a 5 speed himself

Good for him. He has no bearing on yours or my fishing. If you glean a tip from him that works, then good for you. There's gonna be a time when you need a 10:1 reel. I generally stick Daiwa 6.2:1 for it. I won a tournament using spinnerbaits with an old Abu 3.7:1 reel, slow rolling in 20 FOW. There is no answer to this. Just find what works in that moment.

Actually there is a trick for this that works with limited success.  A shorter handle.  The smaller the circumference of the circle your hand makes the faster it can be completed.  I have an old lefty flipping reel that is a 6:1 and then upgrading the reel I chose a 90 mil handle over a longer handle to help with line recovery.  An 80 mil would have been even faster but that is outside my comfort zone so the 90 mil was chosen.
