Like the title says, I'm looking for feedback on this budget chatterbait combo I can put together at a local Basspro that's available:

Reel: Lews Speedspool Left Handed, 7.5:1

Rod: Offshore Angler Gold Cup Inshore, MH, Moderate Fast, 7'

I'll run this for bass and big pike.

Rod is overpowered for standard weight chatterbaits IMO, which generally run up to ~1 oz including trailer. That rod is rated up to 3 oz, while it may be a MH, it's MH in an inshore sense and not a bass sense. Moderate-fast action is good to go, though. For me, I would be looking for something rated either up to 1 oz or 1.5 oz, but I don't have pike down here in FL so maybe that throws a wrench in the works for you.

Reel-wise I prefer a 6:1, but that is personal preference only. I find it helps me slow the presentation down a lot more, keep it from wanting to rise, and still get a hard thump out of that blade.

I feel like the rod would be too stiff myself. I know it’s a bit more but I have a bps crankin stick (split grip) in heavy power that handles 1/2 ounce chatter baits + trailer very well. I’m not a fan of the new handles look wise but it is comfortable. Also they show the SLX crank bait rods a bit over in price also and it appears the Lews KVD composite rods are on sale if you’re looking for composite rods. If you’re only interested in keeping the price down BPS has several rods around the same price as the inshore series. The Halo Rave III in 7’-0” med moderate fast looks like it would fit what you’re after quite well.

Ya - I'm running a 6.4:1 on my chatter rig.

I've thrown them on spinning reels with 35 IPT and caught many, many fish (biggest 7lb 0oz) with it, but that 6.3:1 with 25 IPT I throw it on now just feels so much more dialed in for me.
