Kirtley Howe Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I agree with Glenn about using cheap lures. I almost always use the least expensive lure in a category that I can find.....with a few exceptions. I have found that Rapala Husky Jerks work better than any other lure in the style regardless of price. I have also found that the really cheap large swimbaits do not work well. You don't have to spend $200 to get a good one, but I don't think the $6 ones work at all. I do realize that this is controversial topic and some people have strong feelings about certain lures. That is fine, as we are all entitled to our own opinions. But as usual Glenn has done a great video. 1 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I don't buy many lures. When I do, I buy quality and price is not an issue. I own lures that cost $20 each. I also own some "blue light specials". Some of my cheap lures work better than my costly ones. I buy knockoff Senkos from an Orlando Tackle Shop that work better than expensive name brand Japanese models. On the other hand, pricier spinnerbaits catch more bass for me 2 to 1. I am very loyal to the baits that work for me. If a bait works, I keep using it. On rare occasion, I will try trendy lures. I bought a box full of Jackhammers when they were all the rage. I couldn't catch a fish on one if my life depended on it. Price is not what makes a lure work, results do. 2 Quote
Cbump Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 @Captain Phil you still have those jackhammers you’d sell? 1 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 9, 2023 Super User Posted June 9, 2023 In the cheap bait category, there are only a few baits for me that consistently catch fish. The Strike King crankbaits and the Manns 1-minus, if it still exists. The stock hooks are pretty bad on these so I change them out for Owners. Other than that, they catch fish. I have come across one I consider to be the worst bait I have bought or received. It's a Googan Squad Micro Banger. Out the box no matter how slow or fast I retrieve it, it goes 10 feet to my right and starts to roll over. I tried tuning one of them and it did nothing. I got one as an early Father's day gift and bought some more since it looked good. I tested the 5 I had and they all did the same thing. I tossed them in the trash. I am 0 for ♾️ on Googan baits. 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted June 9, 2023 Super User Posted June 9, 2023 I fish over in the "bad side of town", so the bass I'm catching aren't too snooty about fancy lures. So most anything will work for me. I might think differently if I fished in one of those gated private ponds or golf course ponds. Though I won't buy those hard to pronounce branded lures off Amazon that come in a package of 500 for $3. I'm not too good for Ozark Trail, but I might be too good for Kachewphish. 2 1 Quote

Probably only have a few in the bottom of my rod box. I've caught bass on cheap knockoff Chatterbaits, but nothing like I do on a spinnerbait. Jackhammers are not cheap. For all the money they cost, I would think they would work better than they do. It's probably a confidence thing? So you know, I can't catch fish in a Whopper Plopper either. ? 1 Quote

I've had a few people bash me in the video comments and in social media over the video. Why? I don't know. I'd think most people would be happy to learn they don't need to take out a loan to get quality gear. But I guess not. I removed the comments. It's fishing. Fishing is supposed to be fun. Those people can take their negativity elsewhere. 17 Quote
PaulVE64 Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I lose the lures I fish with, especially if they work. And I'm cheap. My experience on the river is that location and presentation are just about all that matter. Profile and colour are occasionally important, at most. When I fish I normally get bit on 6 different baits. From hair jigs, senkos, jerkbaits, articulated jigs, swimbaits, etc. So I'm not fussy about a particular model or manufacturer, save for a rare one that I favour. And I'm cheap. 3 Quote

How dare you, sir? ?? 1 Quote
VTFan Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 I'm a cheapo I know. I fish on a budget so to speak...and not an unlimited budget either so whenever I can I look in the bargain bins for cheap baits. I'm not spending megabucks on lures that I could hang up and lose on the first cast or $$$$ for Yamamoto Senko's when I see something almost identical for a third the price. Thank you Glenn for a great video!!! Quote

JHTR20 Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 There was a store where they had huge bargain bins, I loved fishing through them for baits. Unfortunately the store was sold and demolished. I did find quality baits for $1.99, closeout Diawa, Bandit and Rapala crankbaits which have put a lot of fish in my boat. One Diawa I went back and bought everyone I could find in the bin. Putting 5 on the counter the cashier looked at me and said "these don't work do they". He had a big smile on his face and I said "no they don't". I really miss that place. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted June 10, 2023 Super User Posted June 10, 2023 I crankbait fish a lot. Just a big part of my smallie fishing that I’ve also carried over fishing for lake largemouths. Overall Rapalas are my favorite hardbaits. They catch fish and they run true out of the package. Close second are Bombers and Bandits, old school versions prior to any buyout those companies have went through. I’m trying to stay positive about Strike King XD Series of crankbaits. As of lately they have taken a nosedive on quality. Junk out of the package. I have a few they are getting back, I’m not getting stuck with ones that don’t run correctly. I’ve been fishing more 6th Sense and SPRO cranks lately. They might cost a hair more but they catch fish, overall better quality, hooks are heavier and sharper. I feel you get what you pay for. 1 Quote
