Tony Christian Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 What are some frogs with that I can fish on a MH rod through pads? When I go pond fishing I only carry a Fury 704c with 40lb 832, and I want to try a frog in there. I'm thinking PPC junior. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted June 7, 2023 Super User Posted June 7, 2023 Booyah Pad Crasher Jr. Booyah Popping Pad Crasher Jr. Scum Frog Small Dog *The above are good value small frogs that will work well - buy one with a black belly and one with a white belly - then green or yellow would cover the bases for you ... Your rod and line set up are great - good luck ! 3 Quote
NJBasstard Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 My list would look identical to @ChrisD46 but I'd also add the Jackall Kaera. It's not quite as soft as the Pad Crasher Jr but it cast better and walks well for its size. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 7, 2023 Global Moderator Posted June 7, 2023 It doesn’t matter what kind of frog you fish with a MH rod. Not once did I think it would be an advantage to put a specific frog on a specific rod. The amount of cover dictates the combo you use, not the frog. If I get on a frog bite in open, sporadic or light cover I’ll use a MH only because overall it’s lighter and the need for an obvious HD everything just isn’t there. Mike 12 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 7, 2023 Super User Posted June 7, 2023 pad crashers (junior or regular) are a good choice and readily available. One light, one dark, and go from there. You'll want to watch which pads you're throwing around. Some of the pad fields here are pretty thick and you'll struggle to pull one out of it to shore if you get wrapped up. The lighter stuff and grass is no problem. 1 Quote

You are correct - I was merely commenting on what may be his only set up for pond fishing where he could do some good with a smaller frog . Mike Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted June 7, 2023 Super User Posted June 7, 2023 I agree with @Mike L, the cover will dictate the rod power not the frog itself. 3 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted June 7, 2023 Super User Posted June 7, 2023 If you believe your set up will provide hook penetration, get the fish’s head up and moving toward you and negotiate the cover, then that pretty much covers it. ? Quote

Mike This is the answer - and one thing I would add is in more sparse covered water you can bend the hooks out a bit more. 1 Quote
Deephaven Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 Yep, I've caught beasts on a frogzilla on a medium action rod in pads. Pads weren't super thick and I didn't have anything else at the time. Not ideal...I usually have a few frogs tied on when that is the bite and regularly it means one is on a MH. I expect to lose a bait or fish if I am too deep in the slop then. 1 Quote
Friggs Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 I fish all kinds of frogs on my mhf rod. With 50lb braid tied directly to the frog. Never had a issue. My favorite frog is a 6th sense. But I can't remember what it's called. I'd have to look it up. But it is a larger frog. Quote

Tony Christian Posted June 8, 2023 Author Posted June 8, 2023 Thank you all, I was worried about the hookup ratio with those beefy hooks. But I guess that's not an issue. Quote

Also, when fishing in the conditions I mentioned above, even the rods power won’t be a concern because you’re not trying to pull her out of heavy topped out vegetation that you would normally throw a frog. You’ll be fine Mike 1 Quote
