Internal brake issue

Bought a Metanium Mgl b last year and right off the bat notices if I had more than one brake turned on it was really choked off for lack of a better term. You basically need to pull the line it wouldn’t free fall whatsoever. Had personal issues last year didn’t fish much so didn’t take it back. Went out yesterday and played with every configuration and figured out it’s just when one specific brake is engaged I have an issue. Any one encounter this before? I guess it’s not a huge deal now that I know but if it’s an easy repair I’d like to know. Thanks, sorry for the rambling

Not had that problem with mine.  Can you see anything out of sorts with that brake?  It sounds like when you are turning that brake on it must be running against the side plate and catching something.  Maybe the brake is being held proud by the locking clips and that's holding it against the side plate.

 

A picture of the brake in the engaged position might help diagnose.

Nothing obvious to me… guess I will probably just live with it since I never need  more than two brakes it’s just a bit annoying paying 400$ for it lol. The brake issue aside I really love the reel and I’m sure it’s just a fluke.

my guess is something got bumped out of place.  Great that you don't need it, but I'd still want it fixed if it was mine.  I've lately started turning all of my brakes on, but dialing them down to near zero to start.  Then its easier to add a little more on the water without opening up the reel.  I'm probably 50/50 on my reels now with half being all on and half being half on.

Take the spool out and put it in again. Sometimes the spool doesn't sit right because of the silent tune feature.

The centrifugal brake shouldn’t affect free fall at all. That one tab must be binding. Might be folding in when you put the side plate back on.

Thanks I’ll check it out. And thanks to the other responses as well. Only owned one other non daiwa reel so not much experience with the internal brakes.

Sounds like it’s the brake tab pushing down and binding when you put the spool in like DVT said, Best thing to do is, put spool in side plate hub, spin spool to make sure it spins freely without binding and carefully put spool and side plate back in together, make sure spool is seated into pinion by turning till you feel shaft go in. This should fix this issue
