The fluke bite is getting really good on my local rivers right now and I didn't know what to use to properly fish a fluke. I have always just used my medium spinning rod with 10 lb. braid and 8 lb. leader because I figured that would be good to use for flukes, but I hear a lot of guys saying to use a medium heavy baitcaster with light braid or fluorocarbon. My medium heavy is currently rigged up with 30 lb. braid and 15 lb. leader (I am going to buy another for straight fluoro but I only have this one medium heavy right now so this is what I am using). Would 30 lb. braid be too big and would it give me backlashes? Should I use my baitcaster or stick with spinning gear for this?

Always used a Med rod on spinning.

Flukes skip better than most baits, why I like spinning reels for throwing flukes/bass assassins.

M or M/L spinning rod with 8 lb mono.

I throw a 5" on a 6'10M or 6'11M+ baitcaster w/ 30lb braid to a long 10lb floro leader

I throw a 7" on a 7'2H (fishes like a MH really) 30lb braid to 16lb floro leader

There's so much milfoil in my water I like slightly more power in the rod, and CPS weightless swimbait hooks allow the bait to last many fish.

I use 30# braid to a 12# to 15# mono leader.  I often jerk it aggressively so it pops out of the water so it is "semi-topwater", sometimes in the same places I throw a frog.  I use them starting right now until I pack it up for the year in November.

2500 Spinning reel with 20# Smackdown to 8# InvizX leader.

I’ve been using an aldebaran with a 68mxf legend x for years and really like that setup. St croix’s 68mxf is a great rod for jerky baits. Shorter length works nicely for tip down heavy presentations and the tip itself feels like it was tailor made for flicking smaller baits around. The victory 68mxf is a really nice alternative if you don’t feel like spending $400 on a rod.

Line choice is even more subjective…I use 30-40lb braid with an 8-10# mono leader but I would never presume to say that’s anything other than the setup that works for me.

i fish the same waters you do. i use a medium spinning rod 15 pound braid 10 pound leader. owner cps light hook with the point out and then slightly buried back in the top. if you feel like your missing fish consider nose hooking with a drop shot or wacky style hook.

I throw 5 inch Caffeine Shads on a Daiwa Ehrler 7'0" Medium-Medium Heavy XFast casting rod and Tatula SV reel with 12 lb Sniper. Finesse enough to work in open water, but has the backbone/strength to work the lure around cover and skips like a dream under docks.

I throw zoom super flukes mostly.

Megabass destroyer Kirisame special with Shimano Vanford 2000.

Suffix 832 15lb braid with 10lb Daiwa leader.

Short rod for pitching and skipping under docks and around cover works best for me. If I do decide to fish big water then I use a NRX+ 852/Shimano stradic 2500.
