Super User DitchPanda Posted June 4, 2023 Super User Posted June 4, 2023 Let me preface this by saying this is all opinion, its not meant to offend or rile anybody up. Have you ever had a whiskey that was super hyped up to you, then when you had it you weren't very impressed? For me the one that stands out is Blantons. My buddy Nate got me into whiskey and his dads favorite is Blantons. He would rant and rave about how great it is. Then when I finally had a glass I honestly felt like I had either been played or I just didn't get it. Now ill say its good whiskey, but its very hard to come by and because of that scarcity and hype its routinely $100-$150 a bottle. I find buffalo trace to be just about as good as blantons at 25% cost. What you got? 1 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 4, 2023 Super User Posted June 4, 2023 Blanton’s is great and super easy to drink… at its MSRP. It’s not worth the 3x aftermarket sales price. 2 Quote
Drawdown Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 Wheated bourbon, generally. Don’t know why everyone lost their mind over it. And I’m not a high-rye guy, either. Quote

When guys are shelling out $150...or even two bills I don't get it. I have never experienced a whiskey worth $200 in my opinion...let alone Blantons. Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted June 5, 2023 Super User Posted June 5, 2023 Bourbon-wise, I’m not overly impressed with Wild Turkey 101 I like Old Forester, Benchmark Full Proof, Maker’s Mark, etc better as far as inexpensive bourbons go 1 Quote
VolFan Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 I’ve never been a huge fan of anything finished in a port cask. Quote

I haven’t had bourbon that was worth that. Quote

Junger Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 Booker's. $100 for a cask strength 6 year bourbon that tastes like peanut shells is beyond me. Quote
Super User gim Posted June 5, 2023 Super User Posted June 5, 2023 Windsor isn't expensive but its by far the most popular whiskey drank around here. Not a fan. The Canadians can keep their trashy version north of the border. Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 5, 2023 Global Moderator Posted June 5, 2023 I’d agree about Blantons, it’s more about collecting the little horsie lids . It’s $60 at buffalo trace tho Quote

I think my memory of it was maybe a decade before that. I distinctly remember switching over to bourbon from scotch because I felt scotch was too expensive for what you get. I also remember buying a bottle of Pappy van Winkle simply because of the ridiculous name and not being terribly impressed by it compared to other stuff I could get my hands on in that price range back then. Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 7, 2023 Super User Posted June 7, 2023 I'll throw another in the mix. Not because it was the highest priced or the most hyped up, but it was one that was super interesting to me and it fell so flat awful when I tried it. Southern Tier Pumking whisky. We drink a good bit of pumking beer and while it varies year to year its pretty good every year. We like the coffee and nitro variants. I love whiskey and even the sweet syrupy kind (in their own way). This was beyond bad. Very sweet but such an artificial pumpkin flavor and no whiskey flavor. Three separate guys in our friends group bought it independent of each other and two each brought bottles to a guys night. We couldn't drink it or even find something to mix it with. I think I poured mine down the drain in the end. Quote
aceman387 Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 I’ve only had a couple different brands in the higher price range (Blantons and Hunt & gather) and I wasn’t impressed with either of them for the money.I’m an everyday drinker (moderation 1 highball) so I keep the price range around $30. Lately it’s been Evan Williams for $23 …Not a high end blend by any stretch but it gives me my afternoon buzz…LoL. 1 Quote

Functional Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 I'm not a fan of whiskeys other than scotch but basically anything hyped up (eagle rare, buffalo trace, turkey, all levels of jack, Makers mark) taste horrible. I'm in drinking something other than scotch its Elijia Craig, has far less straight rubbing alcohol after taste than any of the above. My go tos are Lagavulin 16, Glenmorangie 18 and just recently Glenlivet Carribean Cask. I'd probably die of anxiety if I had to choose one for the rest of my life between Lag16 and the Carribean cask...16 is a classic taste but the Carribean is just something special. 2 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 8, 2023 Super User Posted June 8, 2023 Three great scotches there and if you could only drink those three for the rest of your life you wouldn't be hurting. Balvenie does a caribbean cask also that is delicious. It has just a bit of peat to it, maybe a little more than the glenlivet. give it a try if you see it. 1 Quote
