Kirtley Howe Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 Stopped off for a coffee and a donut at Dunkin' today. Coffee was good, donut was ok. I got to thinking abought the donuts that I remember from 20 years ago. In my area of the country we had a few local shops (some good some bad), Dunkin' Donuts, and Mr. Donut. Both Dunkin' and Mr. Donut made their donuts right in the store that sold them, and they discounted them by 30% or more if they were over 4 hours old. Any left over at the end of the day could be bought for next to nothing. They made fresh donuts all day long and had their standard donuts that they made every day, plus some "special" donuts that they made each day, but were different each day. Now days Mr. Donut is out of business. Dunkin' Donut stores do not make the donuts from scratch at each store now. The donuts are shipped to the store already made and frozen, and the store basically just thaws them out. The donuts are still pretty good, but nothing like they used to be...which seems to be the case with many things these days. Sure wish we had a Krispy Cream around here. 3 Quote

Super User J._Bricker Posted June 3, 2023 Super User Posted June 3, 2023 Donuts are food for the soul, just my opinion. Granted, on a family “Man vs Food” inspired road trip to Washington state we did wait over 45 minutes in drizzling rain at one of our planned stops to get a dozen donuts. To my surprise, Voodoo Donuts didn’t make this list. Quote

Yeah. I’m a coffee addict and I’d still probably prefer to drink nothing over a cup of Dunkin. Tastes like they fill up the cup with half coffee and half water. Dunkin coffee is one of those things you either love or hate. I’m definitely in the hate camp. 1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 3, 2023 Super User Posted June 3, 2023 Back in the early 60's Winchell's had the best donuts, they disappeared some years ago, such a shame. 3 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted June 3, 2023 Super User Posted June 3, 2023 Being a retired cop, I’m a doughnut guy and not by choice. The original VooDoo Donut in Portland Oregon is good. Rocket Donuts in Bellingham Wa. is exceptional. Krispy Kreme are overrated but the coffee is good. With that said, we have a local family owned shop, Longview Dunuts that suits me fine and they serve Catt’s favorite brand of coffee so we good. Two dunkers and a black coffee please. 1 Quote
VolFan Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 I had a fresh Apple fritter from OMG in Concord NC one morning while taking my kid and his friends to Great Wolf Lodge. It was the best doughnut I’ve ever had, and I’ve had A LOT. Quote

Most people I see that buy it have it with scoops of sugar and a lot of cream. Not sure why you wouldn't just buy coffee ice cream and microwave it. 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted June 4, 2023 Super User Posted June 4, 2023 there is a Vietnamese family around here that cranks out a fantastic donut. Dunkin-D. my stepdads best friend owned a chain of them, and he would give me "free-dozen" cards by the fist full. marginal donuts, but admittedly they are the ones i grew up with. crispyCremes are soft and pillowy, but way over the top in sweetness. coyingly sweet. cloyingly? whatever. if they would make me a batch glazed on only one side.... nope. Woody B Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 I love Krispy Kremes. They're small compared to most doughnuts. They're my weakness. I'm not much of a sweet eater but I can stuff a bunch of them down my neck. Like Darth says, they're really sweet. I treat myself every month or 2. There's a store in the town I work in. There's always a line waiting. I'm not a coffee drinker, can't comment on Dunkins or anyone elses. (In my Billy Bob Thorton/Sling blade voice) Coffee makes me nervous when I drink it. 1 Quote

I tried the bold brew at dunkin and it was slightly better. Still not very tasteful though. I need something with more bite to it than that. 2 Quote

Super User Catt Posted June 6, 2023 Super User Posted June 6, 2023 Nelson's Dounuts right hear in Lake Charles, made from scratch every morning. Kinda like beignets, comes in glazed or chocolate. I actually prefer a tall glass of milk over coffee. The sugar on the donut makes the coffee to sweet. Quote
BayouSlide Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 My favorite: what I consider old-fashioned North Country style, made from my mom's recipe, just as she wrote it out for me about 50 years ago. Still have my mom's tin donut cutter, which dates from the 19th century. Mom had donated to a local museum but I pleaded with her to get it back for me. ?? 3 Quote
