Hi, my name is bob and I'm a Ned Rig addict. I've been an addict about 6 years now, I pretty much only fish Ned Rigs, they never let me down. I try to quit, and throw something else, but before long I always find I'm tying one on.

I lied...

Its always tied on, I bring them everywhere I go. Even if I'm not fishing I have one tied to loose line in my pocket just in case I need it. I sneak them into work with me, even when I'm driving I always have a Ned rig next to me. When I'm not throwing one I'm thinking about throwing one, I'm more fun when I throw a Ned Rig. They just make me feel good, they always produce that rod bending feeling I'm always chasing. I try not to let the kids see, but I can't help it, I even let them throw a Ned sometimes, but at least I'm there and I know they're safe.

But I'm committing this year to throw a more diverse set of lures, I will still likely have one with me, and will throw it as clean up instead of as my starter, but I promise I'll be better.

I've caught some of my biggest fish on the Ned, my pops caught a 6-7 pounder on the Ned.

I've come here for help, so thank you to all my angling brothers and sisters for your support!

Please share your Ned stories or alternatives.

And here I am a ned rig teetotler, abstaining from the ned. I hardly am able to bring myself to throw one, even though by all accounts the experience is great, especially targeting river smallmouth. I’m hoping to change my prudish ways this year and give it a chance.

I love em. I actually just put a combo together that's just for neds. The only thing I don't like is with the TRD's I've never got a LM over 3lbs on them. But I've slayed the smallies with them. But I've had more gut hooks with them too.

It worked for me about 4-5 years ago when I first tried it.  Caught largemouth, smallmouth, walleyes, and panfish.

Then the fish wised up to it, just like they do with other presentations.

I definitely dialed back my usage of it in response, but would occasionally still catch a fish.

I picked it up last Saturday, and alternated its use along with a tube, and caught a nice bunch of obese smallmouth.  So it does still work, just not as well as it used to, at least for this guy.

Hi, my name is Dan. I am also a ned rigaholic. I have two dedicated rods for it at all times. Are the the classic little worm guy or do you branch out into other profiles?

I do have good days on other baits but you can darn well bet I throw a Ned rig every single time I’m on the water.

Definitely other profiles, the TRD bugz and palmetto bugs have become a fast favorite of mine. Same for the ticklerz, I throw all those more than the regular twig bait

I mean Ned's are great if you want to catch 1 lb bass, panfish, Perch, the occasional Trout or a rock bass.

But for big bass? Nah.

In April the big bass bash $100k winning fish was caught on a ned rig.

I do agree that they generally target more smaller fish. But they can and do catch sizable fish too. You could try upsizing the presentation and it might help avoid those dinks and panfish. Zman makes a big trd and even a giant one.

Then it's not really a ned. It's just a jighead with a bigger worm on it. A ned is really a 1/16 oz jighead or lighter...

For me a proper Ned Rig is a dink fest for LMB, but for river SMB it's a bigs magnet.

Last week I caught a 7+ lmb, 22” smb probably around 5, 19” lmb, and multiple 18” smb. Love ‘em.

But don't forget it also requires a little worm, a 1/16 jig with a 5 inch worm is not a ned, it's a light jig head with a worm, maybe call it finesse shakyhead.

It is painful at times but that little sucker consistently puts bigs in our boat. In the last two years I've seen both my boys get their PB SMB on the ned a 6.8 pig this spring and a 6.6 last year. I haven't crossed the 6 bridge yet but managed to come up three oz short last year. All on the ned.

I've gone to the extreme and heavily invested in deep cranking. My better half thinks (knows) intervention is potentially required to address it.

Exactly. A Zinkerz cut in half.

Last year the Ned on St Clair was killer.  I fished it with a 4 inch Senko and a Yamamoto California Roll.  This year some of our group nailed the smallmouth up to 5lbs on Neds, I was struggling.  I switched over to my backup which is a dropshot with a Yamamoto Shad Shape Worm and a short tag.  Still struggled and decided to go old school and rigged my dropshot with a 5 inch Pro Senko.  For whatever reason, that combo drove them nuts.

Well I guess I’ve never fished a Ned rig then in my life. Didn’t realize it had to be that light weight to officially be referred to as a Ned rig.

I only whip it out when absolutely nothing else will do it. Even then it's just to say I didn't get skunked because my max fish had been 2 to 2.5lbs. They just don't produce.

Now a bang stick trig style has done well for me.

I just started using it this year. I like getting bit, so it’s fine. Caught a crappie off a beaver dam on one last outing. I’m an accountant so I’m cheap, so part of why I like Ned is I recycle busted senkos and cut them down for Ned.

shaky head is still my favorite over Ned for LMB. Bigger fish and still good amount of bites.

I’ve caught a grand total of one bass on a Ned. Gross weight about 1 lb.

I've reeled in enough algae to fill the cargo hold of a laker hauling ore to Sault Sainte Marie. Neds and ponds mix like pit bulls and kittens.
