What are the in's and out's of the SI Range settings on an 1197.  They're the numbers at the top of the screen that say "125 left" and "125 right"

when do I change them for what conditions?

The range setting is how far the unit is set to scan left and right with Side Imaging. The longer the range is, the smaller objects will appear.

The best practice is to use a long range for searching and if you find something interesting, set the range to 3 times the depth and pass by it again for another look.

When you are fishing, the 3 times the depth is a good set point also unless in less than 10' depths then you may want a longer look to the sides for searching for fish as you fish.

Most of the time I use the 75' range for searching for fish on familiar waters and then set to 50 or less when fishing.

The key is the shorter the set range is, the larger the objects will be represented, and vice versa.

Use the Sensitivity setting as a brightness control and change that according to the bottom hardness and depth. Choose the SI color depending on what looks the best to you according to the ambient light. I change my color several times during the day.

If you need any additional help with that technology, you can e-mail me at purdum43@aol.com

Wayne, You're my new best friend!  Thanks!

It's one thing to read the manual and try to apply it.  It's totally another to be told by someone whose experienced with the technology.

Does the 1197 have the latest software update or at least the 5.210 version that has the Contour Mode for SI?

Did you register it on the Humminbird web site so you get the waypoint management software and unit updates as they are released?

I've done nothing yet Wayne.  I just got it this past week.  I don't really know if the previous owner did it either.

Tomorrow I can connect it to a battery and run it in sim mode to check it.

If it hasn't been updated, what's the easiest way to do the update?  Do you need an SD card?

Sorry to jump in. You will need an SD Card to do updates. The updates will be downloaded to the SD card and then taken to the unit to do the update. WARNING There is a note in your manual about the sequence to follow when you do the update. Be certain to follow that sequence. I believe it says to return to original factory settings before beginning the update or it can lock up the unit and the only fix it is to send it to Humminbird.  Excellent help is available on the phone while you are out on the water learning your unit and doing updates.

You will probably want to get a SD card for saving screen snapshots and doing recordings anyway, so that will be your media for doing software upgrades as they are released.

The best cards are the class 10 SanDisk Extreme III or the Pro, but any will work, Just takes a little more time in the snapshot saving process with the slower cards (like a few extra seconds).

Got a 898c back in Feb. Works great. The first SD card I put in it was a slower one, maybe a class 2. It worked BUT the menus responded very slowly. Upgraded to an extreme class 10 and all is well. I just tried to get by on the cheap and use a card I already had.

Enjoy

I think I have an SD card somewhere.  If I have time, (slim chance tonite), I'm gonna fire up the 1197 and check the software version.

To be continued... ;)

You sure did add some more stuff like Down Imaging, new screen colors, Contour mode, DI zoom, DI depth lines, SI range lines, some new menus, etc.

Down Imaging software was released in Jan 2010.

Welcome to the modern world. LOL

You will need a 1198 manual to figure all that out.
