You don't want to suck at business as much as Michael Jordan. What you really want is to make such a name for yourself that you can suck successfully.

He’s earned over $1 billion post-retirement.

And the vast majority is from his long standing Nike shoe deal he got because of his dominance on the court. Not because he's a brilliant businessman. He earned very little of his wealth from actually playing.

He might not be brilliant, but generally, people who suck at business don’t end up as multi-billionaires. He was smart enough to parlay his dominance on the basketball court into a fortune. There are some real idiots running around out there, but I don’t count MJ as one of them.

Don't kid yourself, man. He made the vast majority of his money from his Nike deal, a deal he got because of his dominance on the court. The same dominance on the court opened positions for him and gave him the privilege of successfully sucking off the court.

I’m not kidding myself, I’d take the trade right now

He made a bunch of money playing B-Ball. Then he was smart enough to take his coaches advice and got a good financial planner, a good law firm, and an agent/investment firm. They have guided/invested/protected him. He is not a genius businessman but he was smart enough to hire people who were. Of course, it is a whole lot easier to become a billionaire when you already have a few million to play with.

$93 million playing basketball. Tom Brady made $500 million. Will Brady get to $2 billion?

You’re right, MJ was smart enough to listen to his advisors - a darn good business decision.

He's definitely not dumb, and he's been smart enough not to say anything that would ruin his Nike contract which is his bread and butter. But this is about his ability to sit in the front office of a team rather than court side as a player and he's consistently proven that he's awful at it. Name recognition gave him that privilege.

Awful  busunessman or awful in the front office of a  professional basketball team? Elway got Manning, other than that he wasn’t exactly a genius administrator.  Is Elway an awful business man? When Tom Brady gets to $2B give me a holler.

I can only agree to disagree on MJ.

Jordan is selling the hornets, netting somewhere between 850 and 900 million. What a terrible businessman
