I have an '08 nitro Z6 with a 90 optimax on it.

I talked to a dealer today and he told me he could

$2500 on my motor. So I would be looking at $7200

difference plus tax and freight on the motor I want.

So I thought I might as well trade boats but would like

some opinions to help me make up my mind.

What are you looking to put on it? I have that same boat with a 115 Opti, and it's still pretty slow.

There's nothing more fun than shopping for and buying a new rig.  The question is, how much can you afford?  Your boat is only a couple of years old.  If you're satisfied with the boat but not the motor, I don't see any reason to run out and buy another rig.  The 2011 Z6 is rated for a 115hp engine so I assume that's what you're looking at.

The 2008 Z6 is rated for 130hp.

Sell the boat and get a new one.  That's what I did when my motor blew, and I will never second guess that choice.

I was actually thinking of putting a 150 on it and swapping

out the max rating sticker. They were rated for a 150 but I

don't know why Tracker changed it.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

Whether it's "illegal" or not I don't know but you will have a hard time getting it insured. And if you don't tell your insurance you overpowered the boat and have a claim they may say you're on your own... If it were me I would stick with the sticker rating or buy a model that is rated for a 150.

The Hp ratings are more for a weight rating than hp and most insurance companies won't cover a rig that is "overpowered".  Repowering is a total pita imo. Sell the boat and get something with more horsepower, 7200 bucks for 10 mph or so more is totally not worth it imo.

US coast guard sets those ratings-i really would not go changing that too much-or really at all.  Not to mention insurace if you have a knoledgeable adjuster if somthing does happen.  Anyhow, seems like a lot for a couple more mph- if you make your living fishing, by all means do it.  If not seems eaiser to buy a new boat if you have the money or just deal with what you have.

Didn't know it might be illegal to change the rating sticker.

I was/am going by what the dealer told me I could do.

Thanks again guys. I am now leaning to just sell or trade

my boat in on a bigger rig.

The problem with repowering is that when you go to sell, you'll never get that money back in the final sale price of the boat. You will have paid all this money for the new motor but the cost won't carry over when you go to sell it. I'll never repower with a new motor again. A well maintained used one, maybe. But never a new one. Just doesn't make financial sense.
