Cable jacket replacement on Ultrex

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone had the pleasure of replacing the cable jacket that goes from steering module to the foot pedal? Mine has two tears in it one by the steering module and one kind of in the middle. I can order the jacket from Minkota but they have no instructions on how to replace it ??‍♂️

No easy way to do this. You have to disconnect all the wires/cable from one end (take your pick), then take the old jacket off, and then route those wires/cable back through the new jacket. Take pictures before you disconnect everything.

You might want to consider trying to find some rubber tape. We called it “strawberry tape”. When stretched and wrapped it actually sticks to itself. This stuff won’t unwrap - it adheres to itself so well that you have to destroy it to unwrap it.

@NavyToad has a good idea. You might also consider heat shrink tape. You could either go right over the existing cable or cut it off and then apply the shrink tape.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but I use one OVER all the wires (including 360).

It's neoprene and closes with Velcro.

You would not have to unplug anything, just wrap it.

There's other brands, I used T-H Marine G-Force Troll Jacket.

Didn't feel like advertising for them so I turned it inside out.

Been 3 or 4 years now, and it's worked fine but had faded a bit.

Like @A-Jay I also use a 5 inch wide neoprene wrap that closes with velcro.  I bought mine on Amazon and it cost much less than the ones specifically marketed to fishermen.  It has lasted several years and I still have enough on the role to replace it.   That said, after looking at A-Jay's picture,  his must be better because I haven't caught a smallmouth that big since I installed mine.

You can go to an auto parts store and get the split plastic wire cover they sell. Some places have it in bulk, but most sell it in prepackaged set lengths (3ft, 5ft, 10ft, etc.). It is available in several color, and even "chrome" if you want to get fancy. Slip it around the cable, then put some plastic cable ties every few inches, and you will be good. If the wires are partly exposed, you can coat them with liquid rubber like what is used to dip tool handles in, or even use FlexCoat. Let it dry before putting the plastic around the wires, or you will never get the plastic back off (don't ask how I know that).

So what I did was cut off crappy Minnkota plastic/rubber protector which it is not, every wire has a crink where the protector was. My gosh surprised it worked at all. Used electrical tape in places just to keep wires tied together. Then used ace bandage that sticks to itself as a wire wrap it’s flexible. Bought neoprene trolling motor wire covering from Amazon half the price of TH marine works great so far ?
