Sam Kirk Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 I want to purchase tubing that you cut then put it on the rod to temporarily hold the guides to set the distance and to help holding when wrapping. What type of tubing and the ID . Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 16, 2023 Super User Posted May 16, 2023 Have you considered O rings? Quote
Super User MickD Posted May 16, 2023 Super User Posted May 16, 2023 Mudhole has tubing and rings that work very well. O rings certainly will work, but are pretty pricey compared to the options above, I believe. One thing nice about the rings is they cut very easily with an exacto knife without disturbing the partially wrapped guide. https://mudhole.com/products/crb-micro-guide-bands I use tape for the larger guides and similar bands (dental brace bands) for micros. These bands are highly recommended by a friend, so I'll be getting some. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 I like the bands out near the tip. Surgical tubing needs to be double over to get the tension I want which makes them bulky 1 Quote

I just received the wrong or tip top, was going to reorder from Get Bit but ordered from Mud Hole and added those to my order. I have been liking the dental elastics also. I just roll on 8 -10 of them and space them out correctly and slip in the guides as I wrap them. I still wrap on cardboard boxes so I sometimes knock off the guides that aren't wrapped yet. Hard to find when they fall on the floor. Has anyone tried tip top glue to secure guides? I have seen that done and thought about trying it. Seems too permanent, and I could not figure how to perfectly align marks without a laser. Quote
Super User Solution MickD Posted May 19, 2023 Super User Solution Posted May 19, 2023 There is a product that is said to be for mounting guides, supposedly weaker than tiptop glue. I've used it with limited success. I have found it tricky to get just the right amount onto the foot and then get it in the right place on the blank before it sets. I think if you are managing with the bands then I'd suggest sticking with them. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 I keep a spool of elastic string to tie on guides when I can slide a band on Quote
Alex from GA Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 While I haven't tried the tubing I take a piece of masking tape and cut a thin strip, 1/16th to 1/8", to attach the guides. Quote

They are very small, difficult to get on the blank because they are so small but once on the blank they are pretty awesome. You still need dental elastics as you move toward the butt of the blank. For the top six guides these seem really nice. Weather was incredible last week so I couldn't get myself to stay indoors to build a rod. This week is a different story, rain all week, good time to finish this. 1 Quote

I will set the rod in the holder guides up and centered. Heat the guide foot with a lighter and wipe the bottom of the foot across the glue stick. I will then reheat the guide foot and melt that glue. Then stick it on the blank...centered. I mean...that is literally it. I read about all the other processes and just scratch my head. I have done every way possible...and the glue stick is (for me) the easiest. I can see the merit in the bands for layout and testing though... 1 Quote

I love the Fuji KT4'a for spin, but they are so small they are hard to do anything with them. Next rod will be a 4 piece fly with double foot titanium snakes for my son, and he wants to help and learn, so will take a while. At least they aren't hard to handle, hold, and wrap. 1 Quote
basscatcher8 Posted June 23, 2023 Posted June 23, 2023 I've started using jig skirt bands to hold my guides on the tip. I get better tension without having to double them. If you cut them in half on your bench they are thin enough to hold the smallest guides and come off cleanly. 2 Quote
