central.PA.bass Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I have a 40hp Merc that needs a new prop.. mine has a decent size chip taken outta it... what do i need to do to replace it? I have no experience fixing boats or motors... Not even sure what year the motor is.. my boat is a 1990.. any clue where I can find the year of the motor? or does it matter? Also, how much would a prop cost? I get about 29 mph out of my boat now.. will it increase the speed? Quote

You can take that to a marine dealer and they'll tell you what kind of prop you need. It will help your speed if you are missing a chunk. Quote
atrocity123 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 stainless or aluminum? A decent prop shop will get it looking like brand new. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 22, 2011 Super User Posted March 22, 2011 The pitch may also be stamped on the prop Quote
central.PA.bass Posted March 22, 2011 Author Posted March 22, 2011 Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to look into it.. it still runs fine so it isnt a huge deal.. but i would like to have it fixed or replaced eventually.. any clue what the cost will be of having it fixed? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 22, 2011 Super User Posted March 22, 2011 If it's aluminum depending on how bad it is, it shouldn't run you more than 50% of a new prop. May take a few weeks though, this time of year. I dropped one off and they told me 2-3 weeks. If you can afford it a good idea is to have a spare. It will minimize your down time. That way you can still fish while the other is being repaired. FYI, Just because you think it runs fine doesn't mean it isn't causing problems. If it's vibrating, or out of round you could be putting excessive stress on the gear case which could lead to other problems. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 22, 2011 Super User Posted March 22, 2011 If you have a BPS or Cabelas near you they sell new props. The merc prop should have a # stamped on it that you should be able to match up. Quote
