Pending world record caught by a female angler. I thought this was about the world record bass, period, at first. I didn't realize separating the sexes was a thing we were doing in bass fishing. Silly world.

Really nice bass though (beats my PB by double!). Happy for her.

Yeah, this is like the one sport where sex has absolutely no impact on ability: weight lifting, wrestling, football, etc. yup, "gotta keep'em sepa-rated" but doing this in angling is just like they're trying to say some how women don't have an equal chance against men - ridiculous.

I'm certainly jealous of her, got me thinking I might need to start a fight with my wife and move to Texas haha

I didn't realize that either.  Doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me.

The photo doesn't even look real.  It looks more like a cartoon or painting.

I just watched a woman hammer a teener on casting gear in the slop on Instagram this morning before seeing this post a little while later. The sex didn't even cross my mind. When I clicked this article I was looking for the 20 something pound weight of the fish and was very confused until I realized there's a different records category for women. Just bizarre to me.

Spinning rods and reels have come a LONG ways yet it still takes some hardcore tactical experience to bring in these larger fish on a 13oz surf rod lol. Especially off the beach on foot. Blacktips sharks are about the worst because when they hit a top water lure, for example, they explode out of the water and viscously dive bomb the lure and then hit the air again, skipping across the ocean like some wild and crazy Tasmanian Devil. At that point, it's all weight and torque.....as opposed to being under the water like most fish, it's full power baby! All the forces are at play. Big difference in the fight!

This is what I think is dumb:

“Powell’s fish isn’t the biggest Texas bass ever caught by a lady angler, but it is the biggest ever turned over to the International Game Fish Association for consideration as a women’s 12-pound line class world record. The application is currently under review by the International Game Fish Association's records committee is pending approval, according to Zach Bellapigna, the organization’s angler recognition coordinator.”

Is It really a record if everyone actually knows bigger fish have been caught, even in her own female Angler class? I say no.

There’s a guy on another forum I’m on that has a ton of state and world “records”….on obscure things like handlining a small tilapia and other stupid stuff like that. Not even big fish but it’s “records” people don’t even know exist so he has them by default. Wow. Cool. Lol

Beats my PB by 5+lb…… didn’t know about the different classes…… gender, line weight and, rod and reel type. I thought it was only , you couldn’t foul hook it.

I was expecting to see it was caught on 5# line or something - 12# line isn't all that spectacular for a green bass tbh.

There's been many record fish caught but not registered with the IGFA. I've caught a few sharks that were most likely record category but I would never kill them just to get a weight record. The IGFA rules state that the fish must be brought to an approved weigh station....ain't gonna happen with a big shark on the beach in the middle of nowhere. IGFA came out with a length record for smaller species like snook, redfish and so forth but you have to use their official measuring device to claim a record. I have it and carry it around when I'm fishing for them, just in case. Congrats to those who make the record books!

I came across an article about this yesterday and thought the same thing through the headline.

I'm okay with separate gender classes.  There aren't nearly as many female anglers out there, so it might help get more of them more excited about the sport.  Besides, it doesn't hurt me any.  Don't get me wrong, I agree it's a bit silly, but so is line class to me.  With today's drag systems and the fact that largemouth bass don't fight THAT hard (compared to some saltwater species), I don't find it a big deal to pull in a double-digit bass on thin line.  Sure, it's more difficult and might take you twenty minutes instead of twenty seconds, but it's still something most experienced anglers would be able to pull off, baring getting wrapped around some timber or lost in the salad.  Now if it frequently resulted in 4-8 hour fights where physical endurance really started to play a role, that would be different.

Back in the 90s I was an active member of the IGFA or International Game Fish Association.  Among other things, they are the keepers of world record game fish records.  Some of these records are fairly obscure. Some are interesting to anglers, especially those who chase records.  Here is a link to the current LMB world records. https://igfa.org/member-services/world-record/common-name/Bass, largemouth

My own personal feeling is there is no longer a need to break down these records by sex.  I have fished with female anglers who were much tougher anglers than most men.

You may be wondering how a large open ocean billfish is caught on fly tackle?   It's done with something called bait and switch.   Hookless teasers are trolled behind the boat.  When a fish is raised, the bait is brought closer with the angler waiting for the fish to be close enough to reach with a cast.  The flies that are used are large imitations of bait fish. I have caught bill fish this way and it's not easy.

The biggest issue I have with world records is they must be verified, which is not always possible or desired.  In the 90s, I caught a potential world record Pacific Sailfish on 8 pound mono.   The country where I was fishing, Guatemala, prohibits the killing of sailfish.   I also wanted to release the fish, so I did.

I once fished with a couple of school teachers from Alabama while guiding in Alaska sometime in the early 90's.  They paid for their Alaska fishing trip with money made from breaking line class records.  Berkley had a promotion where they gave away, money ( not sure on the amount but I think it was $1000.00) to anyone who broke a line class record with Berkley line.

They looked at the record book, and found potential records they could break in the area they lived.  Some species of gar and other unpopular fish would not even have a record in many line classes.  For awhile they were breaking multiple records every time they went fishing.  Sometimes they would even let a world record go because it was too big.  They wanted to be able to beat the record again, after a smaller one was certified.  They fished for records so much they considered it a second job.  Some records were ridicules', like the record for a species of sunfish, with 20 pound test line etc.

After about a year of setting many records and collecting lots of cash, Berkley wrote them a letter stating that they would only pay for records of the more popular sportfish, such as Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Trout etc.

They considered taking Berkley to court, because the promotion originally stated any IGFA line class record but when Berkley offered to pay them for the records they had pending, plus a lifetime supply of fishing line, they decided to avoid the hassle and expense of going to court, and simply spend the money they had made from Berkley fishing for fun.

Sometimes clients can exaggerate a bit, while telling stories, so I didn't know how much of their story to believe.  When I got back to town at the end of the season, I looked up their records in a friends IGFA book, ( this of course was before the internet).  They had been telling the truth.  They had almost every record for many species of gar, sunfish, carp, and other less popular sportfish.

I'm sure most of their records have been broken by now, but I would bet my last dollar that Berkley is more careful when coming up with promotions after those two old school teachers took them to the cleaners.

Meh.  I saw this yesterday.  She was with a guide using livescope.  "Put your bait right there, and I'll tell you when to set the hook".  About as impressive as catching a big fish on a bed.
