airborne_angler Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 When I got the boat,I noticed there was a spot where someone had placed silicone. Its not very large at all.The other day when I was out I noticed it starting to seep a little bit of water. Not much, was still able to stay out all day.The tear is maybe 1/4 inch. Theres a welding shop locally that can weld aluminum. Would it be advisable to take it by to see if they can repair this tear.Or would this just cause more problems? Would I be better off with trying to put some J-B Weld on it to see if that will fix it? Quote
snapperd1 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 call the shop and ask them. Send them a picture of the damage they should be able to help. And the weld will be a better fix then the jb weld. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 17, 2011 Global Moderator Posted March 17, 2011 I believe JB weld makes a product just for aluminum jon boats and other things that are going to be in the water. I bought some last year for a small tear in my jon boat and it hasn't leaked water since. Quote

Daniel My Brother Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Several years ago I must have run over a rock and got a small hole in the bottom of my Jon Boat. When I got the boat home I went under the boat and applied a small squirt of silicone. When it dried I put a piece of duct tape over the silicone patch just to hold it in place temporarily. My intention was to have the boat welded at the end of the season. I still haven't touched it, and it still doesn't leak. From bubble gum to welding, there are a lot of ways to patch a small hole. done Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 One warning on JB Weld. From what I was told by a welder, once you use it you make it impossible for him to weld it. So...if you use it, it had better work. That being said, it is a lot cheaper than a welder. Also, consider some brazing rods. there are some good ones out there. Though if you go that route, get some practice first... Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 17, 2011 Super User Posted March 17, 2011 If you want to do it yourself HTS-2000 is the way to go. It's stronger than aluminum and melts at a lower temperature. Very easy to use and is a permanent repair. Quote
