Just bought a new pelican bass raider 10E! Love the forum, tons of information. I was wondering if someone could clear up how the pre-wiring worked on the bass raider. If you look closely on the picture you can see the two wires. All I see is a black and red coming out from the side of the boat, how do I use this with my trolling motor?(still waiting on mine to come in)

It seems like it would be obvious, but I can't wrap my head around it.. Thanks in advance!

I'd buy a male and female plug.  Put the male on the trolling motor wires and the female on the boat wires.  Quick and easy.

BS,

The two wires attach to the battery posts. You then attach your trolling motor directly to the battery in the rear, or buy a male plug to match the built in female plug in the front and use that set up for the trolling motor to be up front (better option).

Here is a picture of the rudder I use if anyone is interested.  Need to clean it up a little but the old trolling motor sat in a barn for 20 years. lol

ebay.  It's called the Bullnose Rudder.   The people selling it on there are very nice.  They are the owners I believe.  Shipped same day I bought it.  user ID was lorinjim  It was right at $40 shipped but imo is worth it.  Didnt have to buy parts to piece something together and its well built.  Took me all of 60 seconds to install.

I got a version of this from Bass Pro Shops:

MinnMale24VltConnLrg

The one I got only has two wires just like the trolling motor - Minn Kota 30lb.

I spliced that in on the end of the trolling motor wires and have it mounted on the front. Just plug in to receptacle and Plug wires in back to battery and all is good. I do recommend changing the built in inline fuse to the flat inline fuse that has a cover to make it waterproof.

fuselink

The round one that comes with it has been known to melt. I had that happen to me but have had no trouble out of the new one. Easier to change out fuse also if i ever need too.

Just got my new Lowrance Mach 4 fish finder home and reading over the book (yawn).

I'm trying to figure out the best placement for the transducer.

My Minn Kota 55lb is mounted on bow, battery in back.

I ordered a small separate 12v hummingbird battery just for the fish finder but it's still shipping.

So anyway, I am just not sure the optimal spot for the transducer.

I prefer mounting on the trolling motor.

Is it practical to mount on trolling motor when it's mounted on bow?

What direction should it be pointing? Away from boat or pointed to go under ?

Yes.  Its a good spot to mount it.  horizontal with the point forward if its a lowrance transducer.  If you mount the transducer in the back of the boat you will already be at least 10ft past what you are seeing on screen.  The very right side of the screen is what you are going over currently so you are actually a little ahead of what you see on screen.

Thank you for the info cdemarse.

Question though, the way it's mounted on the trolly makes me think it would be sending out sonar directly into the wake of the motor. The manual says to find the area with the smoothest flow otherwise it may cause dots and lines on the display.

You have no problems I take it with yours?

No I do not.  The signal come out the flat bottom part not the back end.  So it is sending the signal straight down in front of the prop.

Here is my rudder I built. I have not used it yet so can't tell you if it works :)

I used 1" PVC , a retractable oar (sawed off the top handle grip and it slid right inside the 1" PVC ). I then used screws on each part to keep the pipe together (didn't want to glue in case I want to undo it and adjust it). The only part with no screws are the T connector itself so it will rotate. It is otherwise held tight in place by the side rails with screws.

As for making sure it does not pop up and fall overboard, I have a small eye hole screw below it in my wood floor to use a tie down on.

Curious, are you guys running a fish finder on your deep cycle battery or do you have the seperate smaller 12v battery?

I have the Lowrance Elite 3x portable so I run it off of the battery that came with it.  I went with that since I use it ice fishing too.

I have my Lowrance Elite 3x running off of my deep cycle battery along with the trolling motor and have not seen any less runtime because of it. I just made sure I had an inline fuse for the FF before the splice into the power wire for trolling motor.
