fishing_junkie Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Does anyone have advice for a new battery for a min kota 40lb thrust trolling motor? I need a new one. I'd like it to last a long time. I know I need a marine deep cycle battery, but don't know what other options there are. Quote
carpy Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 From what I've seen, most people recommend using two batteries. With a 40lb thrust motor your battery should last a pretty long time though. My brother has a 30lb thrust motor and the battery powers it all day long. My 50lb motor ran on one battery for 7.5 hours off and on. Just get the biggest battery you can afford. Quote
timbertoes Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Howdy, new here and this awesome thread is the reason I am here new pelican 10E, still in shipping wrap! my first question is about trolling motors - features .. ( I will get a 50 +/- 5 lbs depending on whats available in Minn Kota at the local stores) these features: more money : folding handlesa bit more money : variable speedbasic: fixed-multi speeds What have you guys found that was really the best for you ?Any regrets ? I'll start Transom mount, and then move to bow mount.Am 6' 4" tall , will that mean something when it comes to reaching for handles/steering ? thanks very much for any advice. Quote
BadBassWV Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 The only regret I had was buying a smaller trolling motor in the beginning. I have a minn kota 55 now and I really like the extra speed I get. Being 6-4 You probably wont have any trouble reaching the motor, if you do you can buy an extension. Quote
timbertoes Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 thanks, went with the 55 variable speed. Hope to get it wet this weekend Quote
timbertoes Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Rudder time... on hand, I have a nice piece of Aluminum, perfect thickness. But only 8-7/8" square. Would that be large enough ? And here is what I am going to try... I cannibalized an old trolling motor. Has a Plastic mount. Removed the head and motor. Drilled 4 holes to mount a rudder plate. Not sure if the shaft can be tightened enough - do you think the rudder will move left/right under normal use ? thanks for your thoughts Quote
Bomber7 Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Timbertoes, this is what I did and used - piece of metal from an old road sign, mounted it to a steal pipe I got at Lowe's, got the MK TM bracket off e-bay ($30) - it works great, I just tighten the screw down real tight and it doesn't move. Hope this helps. Quote
fishing_junkie Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Well, I got a really good deal on the 40lb motor, and it seems ample enough for now. I'm sure it's not the last motor I'll buy. Thanks for the battery advice. I'm going to pick one up this weekend. Quote
WRIFRAF Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Here's a little something coming out by a company called http://canyonlakeproducts.com/. I found the information in another forum of a different site. I'm going to add one of these. Called the Troll King: 1 Quote
Iceman71 Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Ok, I have an older battery that I have not trusted to use. Is there was way to test it before taking it to the lake and getting stranded? Also, what is the best size battery to last all day and what are most of you guys using Brand wise. Quote
carpy Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 That troll King looks amazing!!! Here's a dolly I made for my Raider 8 out of 2x3's. It is 12"x12"x8-1/2" tall. I made it in a certain way so that it fits under the boat and the boat's supports don't interfere with it. The axle is 1/2 inch that I cut with a hack saw. I used 1/2" nuts and washers to keep the wheels in place. I'd have gone with pvc but they didn't have all the pieces I needed and I was in a hurry. It rolls pretty good but haven't tested it yet outside the backyard. Quote
Reyn Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Minn-Kotta Traxxis 45# thrust motor for my Bass Raider 10E. I plan on mounting this on the front transom connecting this to a Big Foot switch and a rudder on the rear transom. The Big Foot Switch will be attached to to a carpeted plywood floor? Question For you folks that have a similar set up, how do you take your trolling motor off if it is connected to the foot switch. Do you have an electrical connection that you can unplug from the rest of the hook up? I was thinking of attaching the foot switch to the carpet with Velcro, unless a detachable connection would be better. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Quote

I have that step up - and I wired in this plug below - can't remember which place I got it from but it was either Bass Pro or Cabela's - we have both stores close by to me. I have it so I can unplug it and either take the TM off the boat and the floor with the big foot switch attached to it can be lifted out of the boat - I usually clean the boat out and spray it down after a few times out on the lake. Hope these help - if you have any more questions let me know. I made a video of all my modifications I made to my boat but I can't figure out how to up load videos - if any one knows and can teach me I would appreciate it. Quote
Reyn Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Thanks Bomber7, I failed to mention that I also planned to hook up a plug too. I'm sure your set up will work for me but, the second photo looks like an electrician's nightmare (to me, a dummy). Perhaps your video will help. Good luck uploading it. The photos will help though. Thanks again. Quote

Wormz Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Wormz, that carpet rocks! Where'd you get it? Home Depot. It was super cheap also. Quote
fishing_junkie Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Well, got my new battery and took the boat out for a spin on Sunday... 24" rainbow trout on a fly rod. Good weekend Quote
Bomber7 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 took my boat out today - not too good a day cause storms were rolling in and it got a bit windy - only caught a few blue gills and one catfish. Quote
Bomber7 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 well the wife has OKed me getting a trailer for my boat - looked on Craigslist but everyone on there is either on crack or just plain crazy cause they have most listed for more then what you would pay for a new one - plus some don't even come with a title. Getting a new one I will know I will get a title and at least 90 day warranty - only draw back is having to assemble it and put a plywood floor on it but the price is right. http://www.harborfreight.com/950-lb-capacity-foldable-4-ft-x-8-ft-utility-trailer-with-8-inch-wheels-and-tires-42709.html Quote
Pond fisher Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I purchased this trailer about 5 years ago. I put two bunk boards on it and a 12' aluminum flat bottom. A couple months ago I purchased a Pelican 10E and redid the trailer. I sanded and repainted the trailer (the red paint will be pink within a year) I removed the bunks and replaced with 5/4 deck boards. The deck boards make it pull so much smoother. A great improvement. What are warning points? Quote
Reyn Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Bomber7, I have all of the toys to hook up my trolling motor on the bow like your set up. Question: Are both of the negative wires from the Big Foot switch connected on the same negative wire coming off of the bow plug? It kind of looks like that from your #2 photo. Is that a three wire connection under that glob of tape under the bow plug. If so, how exactly what did you use to make the three wire connection. Thanks, Reyn Quote
timbertoes Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Just a "Thank You" to all on this thread. has been very helpful have had my 10E out twice now, with great results. OK, no fish caught, but good pelican-boating. Quote
Pond fisher Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Anyone use an Autocraft deep cycle battery? They are $40 off right now. Quote

Thanks, Reyn I just wired the red to red and black to black for the plugs and TM - the big foot has two black wires and I just wired one to the red and one to the black. I used wire connectors - the tape is just to keep it all together. Quote
