I have been thinking about getting a small boat. I currently do not own one. How stable are they? Are they very tippy? Is it good for two 200 lb people? I mostly fish small lakes and ponds. Occasional a larger lake as well.

I guess I really Just want to know how stable they are.

Thanks,

Marc

This video is actually for another brand called the Bass Hunter, but the Pelican is essentially the same boat.  Very similar construction and stability.  Around 1:30 you can see the weight/stability demos that they do that also worked with my little boat =)

I had forgotten about this modification as it wasn't mounted at the time I took the other pictures.  I made this extension handle at work.  A few pieces of flat plate metal and a piece of 1" electrical conduit.  I hammered on those plates like an old blacksmith until I got them shaped to fit the motor, welded everything up and used 3/8 bolts to mount it.  Sprayed it all down with galvanized spray paint, still rusted a bit though.  I also lined the plates with some rubber tape to keep from scratching motor up really bad.  This handle sits right at my waist when I am standing.  So with this and the Bigfoot switch I can fish along without having to bend over to operate motor or steer.

I have been wanting to carpet the piece of wood I use for my floor board so today I did it.  However I changed it up a bit.  99% of the time I fish alone, that long piece of plywood is kinda heavy.  So I cut it down so it is just big enough for me to stand on when I choose to be standing.  The Home Depot couldn't sell me a small piece of carpet so I had to by a 12x3 piece.  It actually ended up being almost 4 feet wide.  Anyway I cut the piece I needed so it would wrap under to the bottom.  Then I used the rest of the carpet, cut into squares the size of the board, for "cushion".  So I have 7 layers of carpet total on the top side.  I used a combination of staples and screws to secure it.  I like it, it is nice and spongy and soft, very comfortable.  I also mounted my Bigfoot switch down permanetly.  Also the whole thing is not fastened to the boat, so I can slide it depending on where in the boat I am sitting.  Here is the picture.

Also I ran all cables under the floor deck and fastened them down with some rubber tape I get from the roofers at work, once the sun gets to it, it is stuck down good.  I also started rawing up a design for a trailer I plan to build this winter when things slow down at work.

Question....

I installed 2 seats from Cabela's that we got the other day and left the swivel bracket centered on the bracket.  Very similar to the seat you have.  The wife and I went out today and I felt myself being further over the side of the boat while fishing and along with this, the boat was leaning farther to the side we were fishing.

Should I off-set the seats a couple inches and designate one side for fishing more so when having someone with me it will be less likely to have a tipover?

Thanks!

BTW...fishing today was dead!  One crappie and no bucket heads!

I think you could have two people stand on the side of this boat and it wouldn't tipover.  You could try offsetting them, but if it were me, I wouldn't worry about it, unless it makes things too uncomfortable.

red,

nice job.....I think im gonna make a floorboard just like that after seeing it...even with the bigfoot!

Of all the mods/purchases I have made for this boat, that Bigfoot switch was the very best one.

I have a Pelican 10E Bass Hunter. I made my own cart for totting my boat with all gear and battery, motor, seats(cushion) anchor and all my rods and tackle boxes. I'm actually going to sell it due to back problems. So if anyone knows someone who wants a boat that was never used yet check out the ad in Ebay classifieds of Greensboro, NC and it is #3261800 under Boats. But Here is some photos of the totter.

Hope this helps you about the trailer totter, it's made from the bottom of a lawn mower cart and plywood and straps and bungy straps.

Great looking rig!  That is the exact way I have my transducer mounted if anyone is wondering about mounting theirs!  Well worth it and you don't have to worry about pinching your wires in the motor brackets!

My very first trip with a depth finder I cut the ducer line as soon as I launched and put the motor down.  I solved this problem though.  The section of wire that runs down the motor shaft I attached to the very bottom of the shaft and the very top.  The loose section inbetween I taped to a piece of copper wire(like you would use to wire your house).  This is very stiff and holds its shape.  I shaped it in a big arc so it keeps the ducer cable away from the tilting mechanism.  Works good.

I was wondering if anyone has a problem with the seat and base tipping over? I recently had a problem with one tipping over backwards, front to rear, not side to side. If so remedies to fix the problem? My boat is a coleman bass boat, I believe it is made by pelican.

Thanks

Are these style boats fat man friendly? How do they handle with a small outboard on them? Right now fishing out of a very small jon boat with 5 hp briggs on it. Really like the looks and mods, and thinking this would be much more stable than what I have now. Just not how sure my outboard would work on it. Anybody use an outboard on one?

Ok, found some answers to my questions and have taken the plunge. Picked up my new to me boat this morning, it is old, covered in mud, was under a wood pile and has no seats or seat frames, but was only 75 bucks. Put it in a local pond and it floats, and able to stand and walk from end to end. It is a Coleman ram x-pro, seemed to be really stable right now with nothing in it. The plan is to put a ply wood floor in it with a pedestal seat in the back with my briggs 5hp and try and leave the front empty with just the battery and the trolling motor. I was shocked that the plate said it was rated for 550 lbs!!! people and stuff, and a 5hp motor. But have my new winter project...

I'm definitely going to pick one of these up. I think I'd like the 10' version. It seems perfect for the type of fishing that I do (I can't justify an expensive bass boat To the wife).

Thanks.

You will like it for sure.  Binghamton huh, I was born there and grew up in Greene.  Do you know where that is?

Ofcourse I know where that is!

I travel between northeast Pa and Norwich NY all the time.  I went to Windsor High School and my son is in middle school there now.  He plays basketball against Greene this year.

Any good honey holes in Greene?

I have the bassraider 10E and I absolutely love it! I use it in the bays and lakes here in Southern California. Please post more customization ideas for this amazing little boat.

I sold my pontoon for $650.00 with T/M, Depth finder and 2 padded seats. I went and bought me my dream canoe, Radisson 12' X 38" wide 34Lbs. came with 2 oars/paddles and motor mount amd 50' of anchor rope. On the bow,top deck of the canoe is a hole and it made for if I wanted to put in a MAST for sailing. I got all this for $600.00 + tax . I'll miss the pontoon a little but for getting into tight spots nothing like a canoe.%7Boption%7D

How do these handle rough water?

very well. with me all the way in the back with the TM and battery, the top only bounces a little going over very large, close together wakes. it will just float on along anything else. very smooth

I'm planning on putting it on a 4x8 utility trailer. How is the weight getting it on off that. They wright like 150lbs. Will be fishing by myself so this is starting to become a concern.

I have the 8e and it fits perfectly on a 4x8 utility trailer...thats what i use and i have no problem getting it on or off

a 4x8 should be fine. i just have a PVC makeshift cart that is easy enough to use. the only problem i have is getting it on with just one person. its a lot easier with two people. but with a trailer it would be no problem with just one person
