jlearsi67 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Well I've spent the last 2 weeks reading pretty much all of this topic reseaching the bass raider. Just picked mine up this past weekend. Getting tired of hauling around a very heavy tri-hull with an older outboard that needs some kind of tinkering each spring to get it "going". Looking for ways to trick out the raider before I head out for crappies this spring. Looking to add a 45lb thrust trolling motor, good rod holders, a new fish finder, a couple anchors and a make-shift rudder to start. I'll eventually get a 2 - 3.5hp outboard, but that may wait until next summer. I would really like to have a switch panel installed someplace handy for running various electrical add-ons, but that will take some advice, planning and pics if anyone has them. I'm certainly not there yet. I want to make sure I do that right. Once I get ready to add some items I'll be asking for advice - and hopefully be able to give some once I become more familiar with the raider. Now we just sit and wait for about 14 inches of ice to melt off of anything that resembles a lake, pond or resevoir in my area....... 1 Quote
Bozz Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Just wondering what's the biggest water Pelican guys might venture on to. Â I've been eyeing a 35 mile long man-made lake near my new location...long but never really that wide till you get up towards the dam. I am near the headwaters that don't see as much pleasure boating normally. I've owned my 10E quite a few years and know it's capabilities in a lot of the smaller lakes and reservoirs but I've never had to deal with larger boat traffic. Quote
basshead1 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I take mine into the salt and along the ICW and I haven't had any problems. Just keep your eyes open for big wakes because they can catch you offguard. lol I've had big wakes hit me from the side but these boats just float right over like a bobber. I have had a few break on the bow too but nothing comes in and I have never been swamped. Quote
tseanw Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I don't live close to salt walter but there are some larger lakes here in NC. And Im not driving my boat 2.5 or 3 hours to get to the ocean. I do a charter once a year with buddies and we have a blast. Not saying i wouldn't do it if i lived closer. However, Im preparing to have a good fishing season first by getting my 10E updated also get my mind right lol for bigger fish...I love bass, but I love fishing period. Finding anchors to fasten my equipment has been a bear. last i hear in order to get 1/8" X 2" stainless steel toggle bolts i need to place an order of 1000 for $600 bucks from an overseas vender...UGH! Any body have any suggestions I'm all ears. Again thanks for everyones help. Quote
jlearsi67 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Those better be some pretty nice toggles for $600! By "anchors" do you just mean installing/fastening things in general like cleats, rod holders, cup holders, etc.... to the boat? If so, I am wondering the same thing. If I'm going to drill a hole, it's going to be well sealed and it has to hold. I'm not sure if toggles are used for everything, or of a decent screw will secure things. I have all kinds of ideas on things to add, but I want to know they'll be secure and not have to worry about them coming loose or creating a leak issue. Are toggles used for everything?? Quote
tfultz Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 My post about the toggle bolts might of been a little miss leading. Sorry. I used 1/8x2" stainless bolts. The toggles are zinc plated. As far as them coming loose i haven't had any problems. I used a little bit of med. strength loc tight also to make sure. I travel quite a bit and wanted some reassurance. Keep an eye on tseanw! Think his pelican is gonna sweet! Quote
kwaldeier Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Hey guys I just got an 8 ft sun dolphin. Think I'm getting a 30 lb Minn kota, everstart max 29,Minn kota 110p charger. Do you have any must haves for a boat this small? Do's and dont's/Tips? Quote
BadBassWV Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Hey guys I just got an 8 ft sun dolphin. Think I'm getting a 30 lb Minn kota, everstart max 29,Minn kota 110p charger. Do you have any must haves for a boat this small? Do's and dont's/Tips?  Ive got a pond prowler from bass pro shop. The only thing I regret is not getting a bigger trolling motor. I have a Minn Kota 40lb thrust. With no wind according to my fish finder I am running at 3 miles per hour. In the wind around 1 to 2. The lake I fish is Electric only, Just think the next time I have to get a trolling motor I might go with something with foot control and a lot more power. Do you have any must haves for a boat this small? Do's and dont's/Tips? Like BadBassWV stated the only regret I had at first was getting the 30lb MK - I guess fortunately for me I got a little lucky if you want to call it that, cause I had my drive pin break a few months after purchasing it. I took it back to Dick's - they had no problem with me upgrading to a 55 lb I only had to paid the difference. I think had I just wanted my money back they would have told me to send it back to Minn Kota - which would have been a hastle waiting for it to be repaired or a part to be sent.  The 55 lb is a huge difference and I'm glad I have it now.  I got you IM and answered back  You will love your new boat - I never thought I would have this much fun with one of these pond hoppers  -  Quote
Docktercolin Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 It's been awhile since i've been on here and it's good to see this thread is still going. I'm psyched that it's finaly starting to warm up and i'll be able to get my little boat back on the water. tseanw on page 59 I have some pics of the yak gear fasteners I used on my rig. Installed them at the begining of last year and they have held up fine. If I were going to install rod holders for trolling i'd use toggle bolts but for light duty stuff the tri grip rivots work great. Basshead, is that little hangkai still running good for you? Quote
tseanw Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Dockterxolin, thanks I have decided to use the toggle bolts. Quote

The Hangkai is still running strong. I had it out on the Caloosahatchee a couple weeks ago. Â I have a 30lb motor and it moves my Bass Raider pretty good but I do have a gas motor for the long hauls. I actually wish there was a slower speed on my trolling motor for when I am working shorelines. I may end up getting a bigfoot but too busy spending all my money on flyfishing gear right now, got the fever. dang bait monkey. Quote
basshead1 Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 lol I just broke down and ordered one off of Ebay. d**n bait monkey. Quote
basshead1 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 What did u order..milkman A Bigfoot foot switch for my trolling motor. Quote
jlearsi67 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I am planning to go with a 45lb tiller controlled mounted on the bow. I have a 40lb on my trihull and it gets me around pretty well. My raider is a fraction of that weight/mass so I should be good - in theory. I was convinced a while ago that I had to have the foot controlled Bull Dog unit, but in thinking things through and just sitting in the boat now, I can't see a huge advantage having a foot controlled unit that would make it worth the extra $200. I would rather put that money towards some upgraded electronics or some other bells and whistles. I may try a Bigfoot switch at some point though.... basshead1 Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Instead of hitting post hit more options and then it is a little square like a little picture. Click it and then a window pops up and you put in the address of the image. To get the address of the image from facebook you right click on the picture and select copy image URL. Quote
