chall59 Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Hey there, fellow fishermen. I just snapped my 6'3" custom rod built on a SCV blank. Man, is that a horrible feeling. Anyways, I now need to find something to replace it. I will be using it to fish paddle tail lures on jig heads. I will mostly be using 3/8oz jig heads but that sometimes varies between 5/16-1/2oz. Sensitivity is my main priority as I will be be fishing for speckled trout that produce very light bites. I would also like something with enough backbone to cast up to 1/2oz jig heads but still have some give to fight those aggressive fish when the water warms up. I am willing to spend up to around $400 for a new, custom, or used rod. -Sensitive -6'-6'3" -Can handle 5/16-1/2oz jig heads (Mostly 3/8) Thank you for the insight! Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 26, 2023 Super User Posted April 26, 2023 Couple of things....There are not many short rods that could handle fishing bridges. Also, when fishing bridges, it's like boat flipping on steroids. Not the best thing for most rods, especially short ones. If you add in sensitivity, you generally increase the crispness of a rod, which could also be bad on bridges. The Megabass Tachyonshaft is about the only rod that comes to mind that is built shorter, 6'7'', has a wide weight range, and maybe stout enough with some sensitivity that can handle that type of fishing. The JDM version can be had, shipped to the US for about $350. Quote
JediAmoeba Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Why so short is my question? You are really limiting yourself... Quote

Accurate casts are extremely important and you have to do mostly roll casts off the bow of the boat to keep from hitting the bridge. Ive fished them with a 6'8" Avid and i didnt feel I had as much control as with my custom 6'3" or when I used my buddies 6'0" Triumph. Casts are generally no longer than 30ft and most are within 20ft away so distance is not necessary. It will be for two bridges in Lake Pontchartrain, LA. The first one has no snags so pulling fish out of the pilings is no problem. You can see how short the bridge is in the second picture. Accuracy is paramount because the fish usually stack up right up next to the pilings. Quote

GetFishorDieTryin Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Contact a Century dealer and see if you cant get a Demon custom made to 6'. Ive got some good gear, but the Century blanks are incredible. As long as you go through the right people they will back up the product if it breaks. Quote
Motoboss Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 I just looked at a GLoomis IMX Pro 723 CBR. 3 power rating, 6’, 1/4 - 3/4 rating at $375. ish. Almost bought it but probably going to go with the same rod in 6’6” ( 783), same series but rated at 1/4 - 5/8. I guess the shorter rod has a bit more muscle due to length. Nice rods Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted May 1, 2023 Super User Posted May 1, 2023 You could check out the falcon peacock bass rods. I don’t have first hand experience with them but they are short rods and the cara and expert series regular rods are great. https://www.falconrods.com/product/peacock-bass Quote
chall59 Posted May 1, 2023 Author Posted May 1, 2023 Thanks for all of these suggestions! I was actually eyeing up the IMX 723 but I have heard mixed reviews on the IMX sensitivity? I figured it would be a great rod I am going to reach out to some of these builders as well. I appreciate everyone’s suggestions! Quote

Deephaven Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 SC5 should be warranty-able. Obviously have to work with your builder on putting it back together, but that's a great blank. Quote
